For our latest installment of …Keep Your Enemies Closer, I talked with Dave Pean of FriarBlog (make sure you check out my responses there!). Dave’s been in the blogging world for a few years now, has seamlessly transitioned himself in the social networking world, and has developed a Donut/Coffee problem like which the world has never seen these past few years because of Friar Basketball.large_ProvidenceLogo

Dave, thanks for your time, and Godspeed with the impending heart issues.

Chris (IBBW): Rivalry wins like the one you had against UConn are supposed to ignite a season, but you’ve lost 4 straight since then. In fairness it was a very tough schedule, but talk me through what happened.

Dave (FB): Hey, we’ve been beating UConn soundly for several years now without getting any ignition from it, why start now?  But yeah, this has been a brutal stretch of the schedule.  As the losses continue to pile up, there have been some positives to take away.  PC played Syracuse extremely tough in the first half at the Carrier Dome (before succumbing to their awesomness), and also had a great shot at upsetting Georgetown at home a few nights ago (despite not being able to piss in the ocean).

The big problems (besides the defense) that hurt in the Cincinnati and Marquette losses were bad offensive stretches, plus the ability to make plays down the stretch.  Even though the team puts up a lot of points on the board, there really isn’t a go to player in crunch time who can continually execute on big possessions.  Some players try to take matters into their hands, but end up doing too much.  We just hope that the team (and coaching staff) learns this stretch, and can put it towards the goal of being able to play consistent basketball for 40 minutes.

Chris (IBBW): Jamine Peterson has come out of nowhere (at least in my eyes). Where was he last year and did you anticipate this at all from him?

Dave (FB): Greedy Peterson was a Tim Welsh recruit who always showed great athleticism during his freshman year two years ago, but also had a very raw game overall.  Keno Davis decided to red shirt him last season, and his improvement has been amazing.  If you saw him two years ago, you would be surprised if he could ever learn to make a jump shot, let alone a three pointer.  Oh, and he will now take plenty of three pointers.  His shot selection and overall decision making still have lots of room for improvement, but seeing how Greedy has been able to develop everything else so quickly, the sky is the limit.  Peterson just pumps out SportsCenter highlight dunks and double-doubles like they’re going out of style.   I’m not sure anybody anticipated this from this season, but Friar fans are pretty excited about what he can do for the program over the next two years.

Chris (IBBW): Lots of new names on the roster this year. Who are the impact newcomers for the Friars?

Dave (FB): So we have 4 freshman, 2 JUCO transfers, and a red-shirt freshman.  Whew.  It’s crazy to think that 8 players (if you include Greedy) did not see a BIG EAST game last year.  Out of those 7 newcomers, we only have 3 that have been logging meaningful minutes.  Duke Mondy has been a solid role player, and at times a nice spark offensively off the bench.  However, big man Bilal Dixon and point guard Vincent Council have had the most impact — if they don’t both land on the BIG EAST All-Rookie team, something is terribly wrong.  Dixon keeps getting better and better as the season progresses, and seems like a leader type with his intensity out on the court.  His offense will come and go, but his defense is improving and rebounding has been great.
Vincent Council is the future of the team right now. He’s a great penetrating point guard (which the Friars haven’t had since GOD pretty much) with a phenomenal court sense.  It’s not a stretch to say that he is currently the best player on the team.  As Providence keeps improving on bringing in more talented players, VC will definitely thrive.  The one missing piece in Friartown is a legitimate center — I’m pretty confident Keno will land one the next few years, because all he needs to do is show tape of Council’s passes.

Chris (IBBW): After some careful research, I can confirm Sharaud Curry has only been here for 5 years. But much like Scottie Reynolds, it’s felt like 10. I hate his rainbow 3’s. What has his career meant for PC Basketball?

Dave (FB): Sharaud has had an up and down career at PC.  After starting out with so much promise by landing on the BIG EAST All-Rookie team, coupled with a very good sophomore year at 15 PPG, he obviously took a huge detour with the broken foot that caused him to miss an entire year.  After coming back last year though, it’s clear what type of player Curry is.  At 5-9, he is extremely limited on the defensive end (and has not really improved on this in 5 years).  As a point guard, Curry is more of east-west player, but capable of some excellent scoring nights.  With Council now able to take over some of the ball handling duties, Curry can now play off the ball and really do some damage if his shot is falling.  Like his fellow graduating class of last season, I think the expectations were a little high after seeing what he could do early on.However, Curry didn’t really take the next step as becoming a complete player / leader, and I think that is what frustrates Friar fans.  I will give him credit for how he has played in some recent BIG EAST games though.  Who knows, maybe he has a few more rainbow threes left in him for a BIG EAST upset to close out his career at Providence. Or maybe he used them all up against Villanova last year!

Chris (IBBW): It’s Year 2 of Keno-Ball. Pros? Cons? Dreams? Fears?

Dave (FB): Everyone knew coming into the season that this year was going to be rough.  I think what all Friar fans wanted to see was how the young pieces of the team fit into the program.  Between Vincent Coucil, Bilal Dixon, and the emergence of Greedy, I think there is plenty to get excited about for the future of the team.  With two top 100 recruits coming in next season, we are definitely headed in the right direction in terms of upgrading the talent.  The big questions that loom however: Will the talent upgrade take care of the glaring problems on defense Keno’s team’s have had his first two years?  Will there be a snowball effect in being to be continually land bigger recruits, especially the top talent in the area?  That is the million dollar bet Providence made, and to me it looks we have a good start.

Chris (IBBW): We know about the dildo incident and Jeff Xavier’s lunatic brother, so what has been the weirdest thing to happen at The Dunk this year? And do I need to be worried that Villanova is likely going to be there in the NCAA Tourney?

Dave (FB): Sadly enough, it’s been a pretty tame year at the DUNK.  Unfortunately, the best thing I can think of is the breaking out of a Pauley D big head (since he’s from Rhode Island) in the Student Section.  The NCAA Tournament there should be fun though – I would imagine you’d travel quite well, but I think the locals would get behind another fellow BIG EAST member.

Chris (IBBW): Give me a prediction for Saturday.

Dave (FB): Keeping up with one of the best teams in the conference on your home court is one thing – playing them on the road scares the crap out of me.  I wish I could say we have any chance whatsoever, but I just think Villanova is too talented.  I think we will lose 90-74.

…Thanks again to Dave for his time!…good luck on Saturday brother…just don’t want to see this game in the 100’s…Lord knows that is possible…

Surviving a Brutal Road Trip

Not only did Villanova have to deal with mother nature over the weekend, but they also faced two of the best teams in the country on the road in a matter of 60 hours.  Like I said prior to the Georgetown game, I would have signed up for 1-1 over this stretch.  The Wildcats obliged with the win at West Virginia, and they get a solid 4 days off before a nice pair of home games against Providence and Connecticut.  Before we start focusing on the upcoming contests, let’s wrap up the game from last night.

-Postgame Quotes

-Reynolds leads rebound victory for Villanova

-Andy Katz: Quick hitters from around the country

-Jay Wright’s interview with Mike Francesa

WFAN is my favorite sports radio station by far, and Mike Francesa is the best of the best.  One of the things Francesa touches on with Wright is the possibility of expanding the NCAA Tournament to include more teams.  Wright is in favor of a 96 team tourney, but Francesa brings up some good points to not expand the field; he mentions that regular season games will be less exciting, because in theory, it will be easier to make the big dance, so the regular season contests won’t mean as much.  I, for one, agree with Francesa and do not believe the tourney should be expanded.  There are only a few teams at most every year that get snubbed, which is part of the excitement of Selection Sunday.  Even some very mediocre teams get in the field, so there’s no reason to let 32 more average teams get in.  Anyone have any thoughts on this topic?

Providence escapes

Even though the final score was 83-74, this game was a lot closer. DePaul led for much of the 2nd half and for a while it really seemed like they were going to pull off the upset.providence-logo3

It wasn’t meant to be though. Providence began to force some dumb mistakes from the Blue Demons with their press and closed out the game in the end. Sharaud Curry finished with 25 for the Friars and Weyinmi Efejuku had 23 in the victory. For DePaul, Will Walker finished with 31 and Dar Tucker had 30 and 8 rebounds. They didn’t get any sort of help from their teammates though.

Providence now moves on to face Louisville tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The Friars are still squarely on the bubble, and because Butler lost to Cleveland St. last night, there is one less at-large spot available.

Many people believe that the Friars could still get in even if they lose tomorrow, but a win all but punches their ticket to the dance.

DePaul not ready to go home

What is going on with DePaul? Will Walker and Dar Tucker look like they are possessed right now. Despite being down 32-31 at the break to Providence, the Blue Demons look like a completely different team than the one we saw all season.

Sharaud Curry looks like the only one with a pulse for the Friars right now. He had 16 points at the break and his banked 3 at the buzzer gave Providence the lead at the half.

I still like Providence to come away with the victory in the end, but DePaul isn’t going to make this easy on them. My guess is that Dave from Friarblog is about 8 deep at The Garden right now.

****Updated for the night session****

The 2nd day of the Big East Tournament is under 2 hours away! Rejoice! I shouldn’t be complaining about yesterday though. Besides that atrocious Notre Dame-Rutgers affair, the games were pretty competitive and entertaining despite being played by the dregs of the conference.

Today should be better though as we’ll see some NCAA Tournament-quality squads hit the hardwood. Oddly enough, no spreads available for the night session games yet, so we’re going to wait to pick those games until we see a spread.

providence-logo212:00 p.m. ET – PROVIDENCE -8.5 DePaul

  • DePaul’s magical 1-game run will officially end today. It’s not that I don’t like the Blue Demons, because I was thrilled that they won yesterday. I just don’t think they can keep this close. They definitely cannot score with Providence. And even though they rediscovered defense yesterday, I don’t think they can slow down the Friars either. I think Keno’s boys will win this one going away and win by 10+. Plus, I’d rather see Providence take on Louisville. That would actually be a contest.

marquette-logo2:00 p.m. ET – MARQUETTE – 7 St. John’s

  • This one I am a little less sure about. I really envision the Johnnies being able to keep this one close. It’s no secret that Marquette is struggling mightily. They haven’t won in a couple of weeks and maybe some doubt is creeping in. But Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews (and Lazar Hayward for that matter) will be the best players on the court. St. John’s is going to need to shoot the ball extremely well because they won’t get a lot of easy buckets. I feel like I’m going to regret this pick, but the Golden Eagles will cover.

west-virginia-logo7:00 p.m. ET – WEST VIRGINIA – 4.5 Notre Dame

  • The Mountaineers are just stifling on defense, so it’s hard to envision the ND shooters getting many open looks. That means that the offense is most likely going to fall on Luke Harangody, who was awful last night, and Tory Jackson, who was very good. I don’t see anyone on the Irish who can account for Da’Sean Butler, and Alex Ruoff killed them in the first matchup. I’m banking on Devin Ebanks bothering Harangody with his length. West Virginia wins, and covers.

seton-hall-logo29:00 p.m. ET – SYRACUSE -6.5 Seton Hall

  • After the underdogs hurt me yesterday, I can’t pick all favorites again. Plus, I love Seton Hall. I think their ability to shoot is going to kill Syracuse’s zone. Syracuse is tricky though. Are they primed for a run after beating Marquette in Wisconsin? The Pirates’ depth worries me, but I’m taking Seton Hall with the points.

DePaul does it!

DePaul just knocked off Cincinnati 67-57 in the 1st game of the Big East Tournament. It was the first conference victory for the Blue Demons after they finished 0-18 in league play.depaul-logo

The bench and the fans behind the bench looked really excited while Will Walker dribbled out the clock. You’ve got to feel good for the team. I can’t imagine ever going winless and never thought it would happen to any team in the Big East. I’m glad they got the win.

But what happened to Cincinnati? Just a few weeks ago they were thought to have the best chance of making the tournament out of any Big East bubble teams. Quite the slide down the stretch. They’ll be scary next year though. Good recruits coming in and Deonta Vaughn and Yancy Gates both return.

This has implications for Providence too. It was commonly thought they needed at least 1 win, and probably 2, to get into the tourney. How much will a victory over DePaul mean for them? Do they need to beat Louisville as well? I’m sure I just scared the hell out of Friarblog.

…Anyways, I like our draw…I’d bank on Georgetown beating St. John’s after they just lost to them…that won’t happen twice…Georgetown-Marquette should be a pretty good game…and then I like our matchup with either a wounded and reeling Marquette or a revenge matchup with the Hoyas…

…Also like a potential revenge game with Louisville, gosh we should have won that game!…

If you missed the game, here is the official recap and box score.Providence Villanova Basketball

Reading that recap from the AP, the very first line stood out to me. When asked by Jay Wright what was so special about this game, Dwayne Anderson replied, “nothing.”

Except that they leave The Pavilion winning streak in tact.

While that’s what Wright probably wanted to hear, in reality you could tell that this game was very special to the 4 man senior class. Anderson was especially good tonight, in his and his classmates final game at The Pavilion. He poured in 19 points and added 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals in limited action as he dealt with foul trouble. It was a memorable last game at home for Dwayne.

His good friend Dante Cunningham matched him with 19 points and 8 rebounds, and added 3 steals of his own. Shane Clark battled the refs all night and ended his night early with just 3 points and 5 rebounds, but I thought he played well when given the chance. Even Frank Tchuisi came off the bench late and hit a free throw. It was a great night for the seniors.

Scottie Reynolds seems to be gearing up for a late season run however. He scored 23 again tonight and added 4 assists and 4 steals. Reggie Redding recorded a career high 11 assists on what I considered an off night before I read that stat line. 11 assists. I’m sorry I doubted you Reg.

Corey Fisher had 13 points and 4 steals and Corey Stokes found his shot and finished with 11. Antonio Pena looked good for spurts. He looks to be coming around at the right time.

If you’re reading all those stats and noticing the steals, it’s not an error. Despite Providence scoring 80 points (Weyinmi Efejuku had 29), Villanova finished with 19 steals in another superb defensive performance.

Yes, they probably let the Friars have a few too many open looks from outside, but Providence got a lot done at the line (20-30) due to some generous calls from the officials. All in all, it was a great effort on defense, and it was especially good down the stretch when Villanova shut the door on the Friars and opened up a 21 point lead.

So with the win, Villanova has officially locked up the double-bye and the #4 seed in the Big East Tournament. That’s huge, and they’ll play next Thursday at 2:30 at Madison Square Garden.

But tonight, it’s time to appreciate what this team did. Despite foul troubles and a lack of student support (please don’t chant N-I-T guys, we’re above that), the team put on a show tonight.

It was tough to watch Dante and Dwayne and Shane walk off the court and give the V sign to the crowd for the last time. But at the same time, being in the same class as them I appreciate all they’ve given to this school, and the standing ovations they got were phenomenal.

We can’t get too sentimental, however. This Villanova team is good, and they are clicking entering the post-season. Gear up ‘Nova Nation, the Big East Tournament is next.

preGame: #11 Villanova vs. Providence

The Game: #11 Villanova (24-6, 12-5) vs. Providence (18-11, 10-7)

Location: The Pavilion in Villanova, PAprovidence-logo1

Time: 7:00 p.m. ET

Broadcast: ESPN2

Brief Rundown: Villanova is coming off of it’s best defensive performance of the season, and if you include the Georgetown loss, seems to have rediscovered it’s defensive intensity. That couldn’t come at a better time as Providence comes into town. The Friars put up 91 points in the last meeting. A win tonight ensures a double-bye in the Big East Tournament.

Providence has a strong Big East record, but suffered some really bad OOC losses. Many consider them on the right side of the bubble right now barring a blowout tonight and an early exit in the BET, but a win tonight might lock up a bid for the Friars in the dance. They’ll be hungry.

3 Keys to Victory:

  1. Defend the perimeterAs Dave from Friarblog told us earlier, Providence has not been as insistent on winning with the 3 lately, but make no mistake about it, it is there bread and butter. The Villanova bigs should be able to handle the Providence frontline without help, so it’s imperative to no continue to leave shooters open all over the court.
  2. Get Dante going early – Cunningham has been Mr. Consistent this year for Villanova, and when he is having a good game inside, it really opens things up for the Villanova guards. If Cunningham hurts himself with fouls or struggles early, Providence will be more inclined to stretch out their defense.
  3. Realize your goal – The Georgetown loss was bad, but the team rebounded nicely at ND. With Marquette’s loss last night, Villanova controls their own destiny. The double-bye is huge and will be on their minds. See the finish line and push hard to get there. Leave it all out on the court tonight. Last Pavilion game for the seniors. Make it memorable and keep the streak alive!
