West Virginia’s Kilicli suspended

The NCAA just handed out a punishment to West Virginia freshman Deniz Kilicli for the first 20 games of the season. Apparently Kilicli played on a Turkish team that included a professional player. So for now it appears that although Truck Bryant and Joe Mazzulla got away Scot-free, at least one Mountaineer finds himself suspended.

Bob Huggins declined to comment.

…Of course he did…pretty much the only thing he could say is “I screwed up”…

Oh, and by the way. The game that Kilicli is eligible to come back: February 8th vs. Villanova. I have no idea if they even expected this kid to make an impact, but if that adds to the storyline, so be it.

Recurring Theme Throughout the Big East

When does it end?  This is the question I keep asking myself after learning of yet another incident shedding a negative light on the Big East.  A few days ago, Louisville sophomore Terrence Jennings and senior Jerry Smith were arrested at an alumni homecoming party for an altercation they got into with a person at the party.  Not only are Jennings and Smith supposed to be key contributors to the Cardinals this year, but Smith is a team captain along with senior guard Edgar Sosa.  I think we all know the importance of leadership, especially from captains, after last year’s performance by Cunningham, Clark, Tchuisi, and Anderson.  So far this year, before the season even starts, the following Big East players have either been arrested, suspended, or both: Daryl “Truck” Bryant (WVU), Joe Mazzulla (WVU), Reggie Redding (Villanova), Gilbert Brown (Pittsburgh), and now Jennings and Smith.  These players get a chance to play in one of the best conferences, if not the best.  They get an opportunity at a great education and for virtually all of them, it’s a free education.  Not only that, but many have the chance to earn the big bucks at the next level and be set for the rest of their lives.  It just boggles my mind that these athletes continuously put their career/lives/education/etc. in jeopardy for stupid things.  I guess the Big East not only lost a lot of talent from last year, but also lost a ton of intelligence.  Who will be next to screw up?

Yet another Big East player suspended

Is it really that easy to get suspended these days or maybe it’s just too hard to follow rules?  Who knows, but today, Pittsburgh suspended redshirt junior Gilbert Brown for the fall semester due to academic problems.  So let’s see, that’s Joe Mazzulla (WVU), Darryl “Truck” Bryant (WVU), Reggie Redding, and now Brown to add on to the list of Big East players being suspended at one point or another.  Most of these players are upperclassmen as well, but evidently, they don’t get it.  In fact, Brown was honored after the season with one of the Pitt team awards.  No, this is not a joke, but he actually received the “Academic Excellence Award” after last season.  Academic excellence leads to suspension for academic reasons.  Interesting.

Overshadowed by DeJuan Blair, Sam Young, and Levance Fields last year, Brown was expected to step up and be a key cog for the inexperienced Panthers this year.  Pitt’s nonconference schedule is not incredibly difficult, but is certainly no cakewalk.  They play Iowa in late November, Wichita State and/or Texas in late November, and Indiana in early December.  Brown will be eligible for reinstatement on December 20th, just before Big East play begins.

West Virginia reinstates Mazzulla

What a shock (sarcasm, indeed). PG Joe Mazzulla has been reinstated to the West Virginia basketball team by Bob Huggins after being suspended due to his arrest for domestic battery when he grabbed a woman by the throat (I kid you not) at a bar in April. west virginia logo

The arrest, which had been Mazzulla’s 2nd in the past year (he was charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and underage drinking — all in one day) was pleaded down to disorderly conduct.

Mazzulla has not missed a single game for either arrest, and pretty much has gotten away Scot-free in both instances.

…I can’t help but laugh…it is Bob Huggins, and it is West Virginia, so what did you really expect?…I’d imagine that Darryl ‘Truck’ Bryant will be reinstated shortly as well, after all, he was only suspended because he committed a hit and run…

…This does affect Villanova though, because West Virginia and us are considered the class of the Big East this year…we all always assumed that Mazzulla (and Bryant) would be back, but I actually thought they might miss a game or two…

News: Joe Mazzulla suspended

West Virginia guard Joe Mazzulla has been suspended indefinitely according to the University. The suspension follows Mazzulla’s arrest for domestic violence at a Morgantown club on April 18th. Coach Bob Huggins only had one thing to say regarding the suspension.

“We take violations of our team rules very seriously.”

…I’m sure you do Huggy…

No word on how long Mazzulla will be suspended (and I’m guessing it won’t be for long) but if this drags into the Big East season, it will really hurt the Mountaineers chances for a Big East title next year. This isn’t the first time Mazzulla has been arressted (he got a little too rowdy at a Pittsburgh Pirates game of all places) so maybe he won’t get as much lenience this time around.

Mazzulla took a medical redshirt this past season after playing in just 7 games.
