ESPN Recruiting Rankings

ESPN has released its 2009 Team Basketball Recruiting Rankings and Villanova comes in at #2 behind North Carolina.  You all know the recruits by now – Mouphtaou Yarou, Isaiah Armwood, Maalik Wayns, and Dominic Cheek.  ESPN is giving a lot of hype to Yarou:

“Yarou has improved just as much as any player in the country and uses his physical brand of basketball to impact the game on both ends of the floor. As he improves his post game, Yarou could develop into the elite big man who could lead the Wildcats back to the Final Four and ultimately to an NCAA title.”

Those are some lofty words, considering he hasn’t proven anything yet, but another trip to the Final Four and maybe an NCAA title would be awesome to say the least.  Some other notable Big East teams at the top of the rankings:

  • UCONN - #6
  • Marquette - #13
  • Pittsburgh - #18
  • West Virginia – #24

…All I’m going to add is to remember the name Dante Taylor…he’s a big athletic freak going to Pitt…I watched him in the McDonald’s game and was very impressed….we are going to cheer the day he leaves for the NBA…

I’m watching SportsCenter just like every morning and guess who is the #1 play of the day? Yep, that’s Isaiah Armwood dunking over 7 people! Quality is not the best, I’m going to keep searching for something better.

Thoughts on Yarou & Armwood

Let me just put a disclaimer here. I am in no ways qualified to be a basketball scout. This is just my opinion from casually watching the game last night while cooking dinner.

So last night Mouphtaou Yarou, Isiah Armwood and Montrose Christian took on Oak Hill Academy. I don’t pretend to know much about high school basketball, but from what I can tell, Oak Hill was the favorite. So it was no surprise to me in the end to see Oak Hill win for the 2nd time over Montrose this year, 69-63.

Without a doubt though, that was one of the most entertaining high school games I’ve ever seen. Both teams featured multiple future D-1 players, and it showed.

The main matchup was Yarou vs. the Oklahoma-bound Keith “Tiny” Gallon (6′9″-300-pounds-tiny to be exact). It was a good matchup throughout the game. I’d be biased if I told you Yarou got the best of Gallon. Gallon finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks while Yarou had 24 points and 7 boards.

Yarou couldn’t really handle Gallon’s, uhh, girth. Gallon continuously backed him down and just laid it in. In fairness to Yarou though, show me anyone in high school that can handle that kid one on one right now.

I will say this about Yarou though. He was the most polished big man on the court. For a kid who came from Africa only a few years ago, he is very seasoned. He’s got a good array of post moves, and most importantly, he knows how to finish. His propensity to dunk it, and dunk it hard, is unrivaled by anyone I’ve seen on Villanova in a while. He gets it by the hoopl and he’s not laying it in gingerly. I love that.

On defense, it’s tough to judge from that game because of Gallon. He had some good help plays and is a pretty good defensive rebounder when the ball is near him. Neither team had an interest in boxing out though, so there were always guys jumping for the ball and causing havoc. But I like Yarou. I see the hype now, and I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t grab a starting spot next year with the departure of 3 frontcourt players.

As for Armwood, he finished with 10 points, but you immediately see why this kid has talked about not redshirting. He’s a freakish athlete that really reminds me of Dante Cunningham. He’s active on the glass, which Jay Wright will love.

Armwood’s two plays of the game were a flying put back slam off a missed jumper and an absolutely ferocious block that he hit so hard that it went out to midcourt and started a breakaway dunk for teammate Terrence Ross (who is going to be a star in my opinion).

Armwood’s game needs some more polish but there is a lot to like. He isn’t afraid to take the 12-15 foot jumper, and make it. He looks comfortable dribbling, which is always a positive for a frontcourt guy. And he’s active and plays hard, which you can’t teach.

Color me impressed with both players. They have loads of talent. If they play solid minutes next year, there is no doubt they’ll struggle some, but their futures are really bright.

…Did anyone else watch the game?…what did everyone think?…

Villanova signees Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood  join their Montrose Christian teammates as they take on the famed Oak Hill Academy. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. ET and will be aired by ESPN2.

…This is a good chance for us to see Yarou and Armwood since they were not selected to the McDonald’s game…the game itself should be a good one as well, and there are some other players to keep an eye on for the future, especially Terrence Ross and Justin Anderson of Montrose…

Comcast SportsNet ran a great piece tonight about the incoming recruiting class for Villanova next year. Thanks to YouTube user NovaWildcat01, the video can now be seen in case you missed the segment.

Hear Maalik Wayns, Dominic Cheek, Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood talk about why they’re going to Villanova and what they hope to accomplish. The Comcast crew also mentions Taylor King being eligible next year as well.

…Everytime I watch highlights of these guys or read anything about them, I can’t help but get excited for next year…I really have to keep reminding myself that this year’s team is special and is going places…

…I always forget about King as well…he’s a player and could be lethal in Villanova’s offense…

…Great to see that all 4 guys aren’t shy of the camera…funniest part of that video was that because of his accent, I couldn’t understand half the things Yarou said, but he’s got a million dollar smile and judging by those highlights, plays with a mean streak…he’s easily my favorite guy coming in…

The McDonald’s All-American teams have just been released to the public, and two Villanova recruits have been named to the game. As popularly speculated, guards Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek have been named to the East squad. Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood did not make the game.mcdonaldsallamericanlogo2

The game will be played on April 1 at 5:30 p.m. ET at the BankUnited Center in Miami, FL. Check out the McDonald’s game site for ticket information.

…Still think Yarou should have made the game…but oh well…hopefully Maalik is recovered in time and fully healthy for the contest and we’ll be able to catch a sneak peek up him and Cheek…

Just a heads up, the official rosters for the McDonald’s All-American game are going to be announced tonight on ESPNU. An exact time hasn’t been announced, but it should happen between 6 and 6:30 ET. As we reported last week, popular belief is that both Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek are going to be selected for the game. As of right now, it appears that Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood will not, although the door is always open for dropouts and injuries.mcdonaldsallamericanlogo1

Currently, Villanova has 3 players who have received the distinction before in Scottie Reynolds, Corey Stokes, and Taylor King.

…To me Yarou is the one of the biggest snubs there is…he’s having an unbelievable senior year and there aren’t a lot of truly dominant big men in this class to begin with…reminds me of Corey Fisher not getting the invite actually…oh well…

The good news continues on as we roll towards midnight. ZagsBlog is reporting that Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek have both been notified of their selections to the McDonald’s All-American Game. Additionally, Cheek has been invited to the Jordan Brand All-American Game. If he so chooses, Cheek would be able to play in both.mcdonaldsallamericanlogo

Just for clarification, this is just a rumor at this point. The official rosters are announced on February 18th, so let’s hold out hope that Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood wind up in a game as well.

Villanova already has two future Wildcats in Montrose Christian (MD) stars Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood, but there could potentially be another one in the 2010 class according to The Gazette.

2010 Oregon native Terrence Ross is the teammate of Yarou and Armwood, and legendary coach Stu Vetter gives him rave reviews.

“Terrence is one of the most athletic players I’ve been able to coach,” Vetter said. “I’ve had some great athletes over the years. He combines the athleticism with basketball ability. He can shoot the ball very well and he’s got the size at 6′5″ that gives him unlimited potential. And he’s a very unselfish player. He blends in well with our players.”

When asked about his interest future schools, Ross listed Villanova among in a who’s who list of national powers. Needless to say, this kid is wanted to everyone.

…Any kid who has descriptions like “Jordan-esque” and “athleticism off the charts” is okay by me…From what I’ve read he sounds like a perfect fit for Villanova’s offense…
