Lots at stake on the line tomorrow for both Villanova and West Virginia: #8 vs. #9, NCAA Tournament seeding, Big East Tournament seeding, possible revenge for the Mountaineers.  We have been waiting for this game for awhile now.  Below are some articles in anticipation of the big showdown.

-Villanova’s rematch with West Virginia has large implications

-Villanova story awaits final chapter

-Rested WVU to battle Villanova

-Jay Bilas analyzes the matchup as a part of ESPN’s Weekend Watch

I am excited to be going to the game tomorrow, but I read that Gus Johnson is calling the game on CBS, which pisses me off that I won’t be able to hear him on TV.  Johnson and Bill Raftery have the best college hoops voices by far.  If you have never heard Gus’ “Rise and Fire” youtube video, please do so ASAP; it’s flat out awesome.

Another Saturday-Monday Combo

After a full 4 days of rest following the big West Virginia win, Villanova looked lackluster and played sloppy at times yesterday in a 92-81 victory over the feisty Providence Friars at the Wachovia Center.  Turnovers, especially against the press, seemed to be a big problem for the Wildcats.  Give credit to Providence though, as they are very active and quick on defense.  Nonetheless, the good guys took care of business late, which is what you are supposed to do as a decided favorite and the #4 team in the nation.  Below are some articles recapping the win and how the Cats can get better.

Hopefully, Villanova can rectify their mistakes in a hurry, because the desperate and hated UConn Huskies come to town tomorrow night.  Two things I can’t wait for: 1) Bill Raftery announcing, obviously and 2) Jim Calhoun calling his standard timeout 30 seconds into the game and ripping his players.

On second thought

I rewatched the win over Pittsburgh for the first time tonight, and I can’t tell you how enjoyable it was. Not only to see the game from a different angle, but you just pick up on so much more than when you are there. At the game, I was an out of control lunatic screaming and jumping and cheering. I couldn’t analyze what was happening at all. Now I finally can. Here are some more thoughts.

  • With 12 minutes left in the 1st half, Shane Clark had outscored Pitt 9-8. I cannot overstate how huge he was early in the game. His three triples deserved a Puuurrreee call from Gus Johnson. None of them touched the rim.
  • With just over 8 minutes left in the 1st half, Sam Young scored to get Pitt within 5. Jay Wright immediately called timeout. Great job there to stop things before Pitt made a huge run.
  • We did not shoot well at all, and still put 78 points on Pitt, and won. I’m very, very impressed by that.
  • We stopped attacking the rim near the end of the first half, and that is why we were losing at the half.
  • Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery did a phenomenal job calling this game, although I thought the last play could have been better called.
  • At the game, I thought Sam Young killed us. After watching him play, he destroyed us. We harrassed him, double teamed him, poked him in the eye, stepped on his toes, everything. He was just that good.
  • I will not miss Levance Fields, Sam Young, and possibly even DeJuan Blair at all. Good luck to them, and good riddance. I hated playing them. They are freaking good.
  • Corey Stokes made one three, but it was a big one.
  • Dwayne Anderson was ice cold all night, and then came up huuuuuuuuge down the stretch.
  • The last play will be played for years and years. I’ll never forget that moment. It was pure heroics by Reggie Redding, Dante Cunningham and most of all Scottie Reynolds.
  • I love this team.

Sweet Sixteen announcers set

Awful Announcing has the news on what broadcast teams will be calling the Sweet Sixteen games, and you’re going to be happy (at least I think you will). Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery have been assigned to the East Regionals, and will call Villanova’s clash with Duke on Thursday night.bill-raftery

For what it’s worth, Dick Enberg and Jay Bilas (who announced ‘Novas first games) will be in the West.

…I don’t know what is is, but it seems that year after year Gus Johnson gets the short end of the stick…I was almost certain that if he didn’t get the East (by far the most intriguing set of games) that he’d get to do Gonzaga…you know since it feels like he’s called all of their games…

…Anyways all I have to say to this news is ONIONS!…

CBS has released their announcing pairs for the NCAA Tournament, and the phenomenal blog Awful Announcing was the first to break the news. Pairings are listed below.final-four-logo

  • Jim Nantz/Clark Kellogg
  • Dick Enberg/Carter Blackburn/Jay Bilas
  • Verne Lundquist/Bill Raftery
  • Gus Johnson/Len Elmore
  • Kevin Harlan/Dan Bonner
  • Ian Eagle/Jim Spanarkel
  • Craig Bolerjack/Bob Wenzel
  • Tim Brando/Mike Gminski

The sideline reporters will Lesley Visson, Tracy Wolfson and Sam Ryan.

Hopefully I won’t have to worry about this kind of thing. If we’re in the Philly pod I’ll be at the games, but if we advance into the Sweet Sixteen here’s hoping we draw Johnson/Elmore or Lundquist/Raftery. I’d love to avoid Brando/Gminski and Dick Enberg, even though he’s paired with Jay Bilas.

postGame: Villanova 77, Notre Dame 60

Hold on, I’m giving Luke Harangody a tissue. He might need a hug too.

Redding negated McAlarney for 40 straight minutes.

Redding negated McAlarney for 40 straight minutes.

Okay, now we can talk. In case you missed the game here in the official recap and the box score.

I knew it was going to be a good night when I saw the impeccable crew of Bill Raftery, Jay Bilas and Sean McDonough. Raftery was even sporting the Villanova tie! Early onions for Raf!

So I’m just going to come out and say it, because I don’t know how else to put it. Villanova was awesome tonight. That was vintage ‘Villanova Basketball’ as we so often refer to it.While they played a tight 1st half, they had a plan and stuck to it and completely overpowered Notre Dame after the break.

It’s interesting that we talked earlier today about how Villanova lacked the ‘bail-out’ guy that could consistently put a team on their back. We talked about how both Scottie Reynolds and Dante Cunningham were the closest thing Villanova had, but for one reason or another they just weren’t that guy. So much for that theory.

Reynolds finished with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (and juts 1 turnover) and was a blistering 6-7 from downtown. He was unstoppable all night and the Irish had no answer for him. Great to watch. His running mate Cunningham had 18 and 8 in yet another solid performance. He was especially great in the 2nd half, at one point going on a personal 8-0 run.

But the player of the game? That’s Reggie Redding, who single handedly (okay, he had a little help) took sharpshooter Kyle McAlarney out of the game. He had just 5 points on 2-7 shooting (just 1-3 from beyond the arc) with most of his shots coming in garbage time. That was a defensive performance for the ages. I can’t say enough about the game that Redding had tonight. He had 7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Vintage Redding.

Shane Clark turned it on in the 2nd half, including back to back possessions where he made Harangody look foolish. He finished with 13 points. Even the struggling Antonio Pena had a great bounceback effort. He was in foul trouble for most of the night but had some good offensive possessions and finished with 6 points and 3 rebounds in just 13 minutes. Oddly enough, Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes had little impact on the game, combining for just 5 points.

Going into the game I was really worried about going to Notre Dame. They are typically very tough at home, but I really overestimated just how bad they are. Maybe I remember McAlarney’s 30 point outburst last year, maybe I watched them give UConn a tough battle, but they just aren’t very good.

Ryan Ayers was the big story tonight, finishing with 25 points on 7 3’s. Villanova continually left him open and he was hot and knocked them down. Credit him. The aforementioned Harangody finished with 18 and 7, and that was it for the Irish.

Speaking of Harangody, what a baby. I’ve never seen any who is supposedly the leader of a team bitch and whine like he did tonight. He acts like he is the best player on the court and he deserves the Michael Jordan treatment. Every time he was touched he flopped and screamed. It was actually embarrassing to watch. I’m telling you now, if he wins Big East Player of the Year again, it’s a crime. Good thing he won’t. I always thought he was a high character guy who worked hard and kept his mouth shut. Boy, was I wrong.

Anyways, great win for the Wildcats tonight. They really needed that. More importantly though, they appear back to playing good ball. That’s important with a desparate Providence team coming to town on Thursday.

Enjoy your night everyone.
