Wrapping up the Holy War

One of my favorite things to do is read the quotes from the postgame press conferences following each game.  The script was not available for last night’s postgame press conference at the Palestra, but the following articles provide some reactions from both teams.

By the way, there are 16 undefeated teams in Division I basketball currently.  Not surprisingly, 5 of these teams are from the Big East, including Villanova (9-0), Syracuse (8-0)-who is playing Florida right now, Seton Hall (7-0), Georgetown (7-0), and West Virginia (6-0).

The Game: #4 Villanova (5-0) vs. LaSalle (3-1)lasalle-logo

Location: The Pavilion in Villanova, PA

Time: 3:30 p.m. ET

Broadcast: ESPN2 HD

Brief Rundown: After winning all 3 games in Puerto Rico en route to the title, Villanova has had a much-deserved 5 days off to prepare for their 2nd Big 5 contest of the year. It wasn’t easy down in San Juan, but in every game a different cast of characters stepped up to bring ‘Nova to victory. The most constant force was Antonio Peña, who was named Tournament MVP after posting 17 points and 16 rebounds in the final. The big man is averaging a double-double on the year, and will look to continue that on Saturday.

The Explorers are off to a strong start to their season with wins over Hampton, Davidson and Tulane, and they even played South Carolina closely in a 10-point loss. Rodney Green is the main man this year, and he’s had a fine start to his senior campaign. Green is averaging over 20 points and nearly 8 rebounds per game. He’s big at 6′5″, so expect a heavy dose of Corey Stokes and Dominic Cheek to try and slow him down. He’s the key to LaSalle having a chance.

What I Want To See: I want to see Mouphtaou Yarou, but that looks unlikely. The ‘trap-game’ thought crossed my mind, but the more I think about it the 5 days off gives Jay Wright a chance to refocus the team. I want to continue to see this team rediscover the efficient offense we saw in the last Big 5 outing vs. Penn. We haven’t been shooting it well, especially from outside.

When everything is working

Yep, I could get used to that. I loved seeing Jay Wright taking shots of Jose Cuervo and then closing his eyes and pointing at 5 guys on the bench and telling them to go play basketball. That was really enjoyable to watch. What? That didn’t happen? Well, it sure felt like it.

Reynolds was back to his usual form on Monday.

Reynolds was back to his usual form on Monday.

Anything lineup that Wright put on the floor last night was gold. Hell, even Maurice Sutton and Isaiah Armwood, 2 guys who didn’t get much burn in the opener, were in the game while it was still, well, a game. That’s how much confidence Jay Wright appears to have in his 10 man rotation. Only Armwood (who went scoreless) did not score in the 1st half. Even Russell Wooten notched his 1st career points in garbage time as his lay-up put the Cats over the century mark.

I watched last night’s game while I helped my girlfriend build a new desk from IKEA for her room (by the way, screw IKEA. You may be relatively cheap, but your furniture is a pain in the ass to build). As I struggled through the missing screws and bolts, all I kept hearing were cheers from the crowd and “you can’t leave him open like that” from the announcers in reference to Corey Stokes and Taylor King. Both of those are very good signs. Hell, I think at one point the play-by-play guy yelled that Stokes drained another 3 and the ball had barely left his hand. It was that kind of night. Everything was going in.

‘Nova shot 58.7% from the field and 52.4% from downtown. We aren’t going to be beat when we shoot like that, and we haven’t even gotten to the defensive end yet, where a team I lambasted for its poor play in the 1st half against Fairleigh Dickinson held up both middle fingers to me and put their foot on Penn’s throats from the opening whistle.

Star wing Tyler Bernardini was held scoreless thanks to mostly Corey Stokes, but a host of other characters as well. If anyone thinks Stokes isn’t up to the challenge of defensive stopper, it might be time to reconsider. That’s two great games for him in a row. More than that though, the Cats defense was just suffocating all over. 8 steals and they held Penn to 34% shooting. Coupled with the offensive outburst, that’s a good recipe for success.

By the way, remember how our “young team” was going to go through growing pains? One thing we did not consider was that when you have 10 guys (11 when Reggie Redding returns) who legitimately are hungry to get on the court, you are going to have a team that plays like it did last night. You either work your ass off and produce, or you don’t play. And with 6 newcomers who want to secure their spot, there is going to be  a ton of competition that will translate into the production we saw last night. (We’re still going to have the growing pains, but mark my words, the previous paragraph will happen as well in the coming weeks).

Onto the player notes:

  • Maalik Wayns led all Cats with 16 points off the bench. Great game for the youngster. But just 1 assist and 4 turnovers. He might be the best pure point guard on the roster, but we’re going to need a better assist-turnover ratio. Good run out there though.
  • Corey Stokes, Taylor King, and Scottie Reynolds all had 14 points last night. King and Stokes both continue to shoot the crap out of the ball. Reynolds with a nice bounceback game. Stokes (5 boards) and King (7 boards) both look like they are going great this year on both ends. I may have underestimated Stokes’ chances at All-BIG EAST.
  • Antonio Peña got that double-double I was looking for with 12 points and 10 boards (plus 2 blocks). He continues to disappear for stretches, but his overall game looks improved from a year ago. So far, he has proved to be the rebounder we all hoped.
  • Corey Fisher with an even stronger game this time out (13 points, 8 assists, 3 steals). He’s very, very good. My UConn friend the other day: “I’d rather have him than Kemba Walker.” You don’t hear that much from the Husky fans.
  • Dominic Cheek showed us that mid-range game we heard so much about. I like it. And that outside shot looks a lot better than I expected. He’s going to be a super-star in a year or two. Like All-American good. The good thing is that he doesn’t have to be that right now.
  • Mo Sutton continues to look good on the boards and the defensive end. His enthusiasm from last year (towel guy) has certainly translated onto the court this year. Probably a little thin for the BIG EAST but he is active and loves playing. You can’t teach that.
  • Mouphtaou Yarou was the only negative last night. 4 points, 5 rebounds, and he fouled out. He’s raw. Those who said he was one-and-done : you were wrong. He’s going to be very good, but it is going to take time. Thankfully we can lean on the backcourt for the time being.
  • Congrats to Russell Wooten for his 1st career points!

The team leaves today for Puerto Rico and faces George Mason in the opening round on Thursday at 2 p.m.! The game will be on ESPNU, and since it is in the afternoon, there had better be a link I can watch at work!

The Game: #5 Villanova (1-0) vs. Penn (0-1) penn logo

Location: The Pavilion in Villanova, PA

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Broadcast: ‘Nova Nation All-Access and ESPN-950 AM

Brief Rundown: Villanova won their season opener over Fairleigh Dickinson by 23 points, but they struggled to pull away from the Knights in the 1st half. It wasn’t until the 2nd half that the upperclassmen, namely Corey Stokes and Corey Fisher, led the Cats to victory. Villanova introduced all 6 of its new players to the home crowd, and none of them disappointed in the time they saw. This is the first Big 5 matchup of the year for both schools. Villanova has dominated the City Series recently and will look to continue that trend.

Penn opened their campaign with a 15-point loss at Penn State on Friday. It wasn’t a terrible game for the Quakers, as Penn State looks to be an up-and-coming team in the Big Ten. Penn actually kept it close until late in the game when the Nittany Lions pulled away. Tyler Bernardini and Jack Eggleston did the majority of the work for the Quakers, and look to be key players this season. Senior guard Darren Smith was 1-11 from the field and 0-7 from beyond the arc. So, I guess he likes to shoot. Let’s keep an eye on that fellow.

Last Meeting: Villanova beat Penn 69-47 behind Dante Cunningham and Corey Stokes.

What I Want To See: The defense that came out in the 2nd half against FDU. That was an embarrassing performance in the opening 20 minutes. Chalk it up to pregame jitters for the team, but that can’t happen again, especially in a Big 5 game. Villanova is the hated school in the Big 5, and Penn will be gunning to ruin their night. Suffocate their perimeter shooting early and build a lead and then put the nail in the coffin.

Non-Conference Game to Watch: St. Joseph’s vs. Villanova

ESPN writer Dana O’Neil and Scouts Inc. John Stovall analyzed the A-10 conference today.  Of the 10 non-conference games that O’Neil “can’t wait to see,” 4 are A-10-Big East matchups.  Coming in at #2 on the list is the St. Joseph’s Hawks vs. the Villanova Wildcats on December 9th at the infamous Palestra.  O’Neil, regarding this contest:st. joe's logo

Even though this is a transition year for the Hawks and the Wildcats ought to be a top-10 team, nothing is guaranteed when the Holy War is played at the Palestra.  This is the sort of game that ‘Nova coach Jay Wright dreads.

Touche.  In Big 5 games, especially at the Palestra, especially St. Joe’s vs. Villanova, records and rankings can be thrown out the window.  While Villanova will be the heavy heavy favorite, you just never know, because this rivalry is one of the best in the nation.  Other A-10-Big East games that O’Neil discusses are Xavier vs. Marquette (November 26th), Pittsburgh at Duquesne (December 2nd), and Temple at Georgetown (November 17th).

Jonathan Tannenwald at Soft Pretzel Logic is reporting that Rollie Massimino will join John Chaney and Speedy Morris in the Big 5’s Hall of Fame Class of 2010. The date and location of the induction ceremony have not been announced yet.

Here’s Tannenwald on Rollie’s induction:

“I also wonder if people will complain about Massimino’s induction. I think he deserves it because of the national championship. Or, to put it another way, I don’t see how you can’t induct him – especially when Harold Jensen, Dwayne McClain and Ed Pinckney are already in. If you’re going to have a place to honor the best players and coaches in Big 5 history, then Massimino should be there, even with everything that came afterwards.”

Massimino finished with a record of 357-241 (.596) in 19 seasons at Villanova and took the Wildcats to 11 NCCA Tournaments, including the school’s only National Championship in 1985.

…It’s about damn time…I wasn’t even born yet when they won it all in ‘85 but I did get the chance to meet Rollie after the Pitt win and he’s still a great guy…

…Kind of crazy that Rollie, Chaney and Speedy are all going in at the same time…pretty much the 3 biggest coaches in their respective school’s history…

More Big 5 Awards

In addition to the Big 5 awards announced in a previous post, the Wildcats will add a few more.  It should be noted first though, that The Most Outstanding Player Award (Robert V. Geasey Award) for the Big 5 this year goes to St. Joe’s Ahmad Nivins.  As mentioned in the article in the Philadelphia Daily News, by Dick Jerardi, this is not an MVP award or an award based on team accomplishments, rather it is an award based on highest number of votes for most outstanding player in the Big 5.  Also on the Big 5 First Team with Nivins is Dante Cunningham, Dionte Christmas (Temple), Scottie Reynolds, and Rodney Green (La Salle).   The 6 players on the Big 5 Second Team are Corey Fisher, Reggie Redding, Dwayne Anderson, Tasheed Carr (St. Joe’s), Ryan Brooks (Temple), and Lavoy Allen (Temple).  These awards will be given out on Monday at the Herb Good Basketball Club Banquet.

My initial reaction to this was “what about Dante for most outstanding player.”  After a few seconds, I quickly remembered that Villanova basketball is not about superstars or just one guy.  I can guarantee that Dante would gladly take a Final Four run over a personal award any day.  It’s not about personal glory for Villanova basketball, and I think that shows day in and day out with this program.  Congrats to all though on well-deserved achievements.
