Thought I’d update anyone that’s interested in the status of the ‘Nova players in the NBA.

• After a strong 3 game start Randy Foye, and the Wizards for that matter, have cooled off considerably.  In his last 5 games Foye has only 4 assists.  He’s had point totals of 7, 6, 16, and 16.  He sprained his ankle against the Heat Tuesday night and did not return.  The Wizards have lost all 5.
• Kyle Lowry remains a player off the bench for the surprisingly strong Rockets considering their situation.  He gets about 25 minutes a game, and playing an efficient game as a back seat option to Aaron Brooks and Carl Landry.  In his last 4 he’s averaged 8 pts, 5 asts, and 3 rebs.  He also had 4 blocks against the Thunder.
• Dante Cunningham, as you know if you’ve seen the recent posts, got his first NBA game time action.  He scored 6 pts in 6 minutes against the Timberwolves on 3-4 shooting.  No other box stats.
• Tim Thomas is still in Limbo.

I meant to post this at the beginning of the week, but it slipped my mind.

The NYC Alumni Kickoff to the season is being held tonight from 7:00-10:00 p.m. at The Australian Pub on West 38th Street in Manhattan.

Come celebrate the start of the Villanova Basketball Season with NYC alumni and friends. Food and drink specials, giveaways and raffles including signed merchandise, tickets, dinner, etc.

…No game on tonight, but apparently they will be showing classic ‘Nova games on the TV (I’m thinking last year’s Elite Eight will be on the menu)…

…Not totally sure if I’m going to attend…waiting to hear back from Jamie on whether he’s up for it or not…the early returns are not looking good…but for anyone in the area I definitely suggest you attend and have a great time!…

Thanks to TheNovaNation Twitter people for this one. Heard about it, but hadn’t seen it yet. Good to see Howie Long involved. Terry Bradshaw is legitimately batshit crazy, but as a devout FOX NFL Sunday fan, I can’t complain. Would have loved Michael Strahan though.

It occurred to me today that I’m quickly tiring of waiting for Villanova hoops. I’ve already bought my tickets, and I’d pay good money to be able to see a game this weekend. Seriously. No disrespect to the football team — you’re having a great year, and I’ve actually become a huge fan the past 2 years, but I need me some basketball.

Luckily, the Villanova chapter of the NBA got things underway this week with their preseason starting up. That, and more Villanova athletes continue to bring home the hardware during the fall season. I guess times aren’t so rough.

• Kyle Lowry didn’t start for Houston, but he ended up playing more minutes than Aaron Brooks and filled the stat sheet. Keep it up Kyle.
• Dante Cunningham was a DNP (Coaches’ Decision) in the Blazers opening game. But he did having a little dunk contest at their Fan Fest. In the words of the Blazers’ columnist “he can fly.”
• Randy Foye came off the bench to score 14 points in his Wizards debut. He, like Lowry, is a stat-sheet filler.
• Gary Parrish of CBSSports ranks ‘Nova 6th in his final pre-season poll. Fair.
• Get ready for “Hoops Mania presented by Advance Staging Productions.” Wow, I think I just threw up a little.
• The Women’s Cross Country won the Bill Dellinger Invitational to start their season. And afterward, they moved up to #2 in the country. Way to go girls!
• Megan Goelz was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the third consecutive week. Kudos.
• Elysse Studzinski was also named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll in volleyball.

Just had this passed along to me, and it gave me a good laugh. The Oregonian interviewed the Blazers players about what the one thing they could have if they were stranded on a desert island.

Most of you probably know this already, but Notre Dame transfer Scott Martin tore his ACL during a workout on Thursday and will miss the entire season.  After a disappointing year for the Fighting Irish, some hope was restored with Luke Harangody announcing his return for a senior year.  In addition, the infusion of transfers Martin (Purdue) and Ben Hansbrough (Mississippi) into Notre Dame’s rotation was supposed to be a big lift.  Now, with Martin out, Harangody will have to shoulder much of the load down low yet again.  Martin put up decent numbers at Purdue in his sophomore season, averaging over 8 points and almost 4 rebounds a game, so don’t underestimate the impact of this injury in the rugged Big East. 

Just a quick note on Dante Cunningham and the Portland Trailblazers.  They, along with the rest of NBA teams, opened up camps this past week in preparation for the start of the season in about a month.  The coverage on the Trailblazers website is very in-depth, with numerous blogs, videos, pictures, daily recaps, and much more.  Definitely check it out to keep up to date on Dante and the rest of his new teammates.

Anderson is off to Germany.

The Hoop is reporting that Dwayne Anderson has signed his first professional contract with the German Bundesliga’s MEG Goettingen. Apparently, they are one of the top teams in Germany.

Congratulations Dwayne! Keep making us proud!

One of our more loyal readers, Larry Harris, emailed us to share his story of the recent Baltimore Basketball Night for Villanova alumni and friends. Below is Larry’s story from the night, which he asked me to share it with all of you. He also included a picture from the evening.

Jay Wright, Harry Peretta and several Villanova assistant coaches made an appearance in Baltimore on 9-17 before an enthusiastic crowd of alumni and supporters at the Admiral Fell Inn in the area of the city known as Fells Point.

Wright gave his always-inspirational speech about the ‘Cats’ chances for the coming season and told great stories about the “reunion” of former players a couple weeks back. He also indicated Baltimore has become “fertile ground” for recruiting and said fans could expect to see him in this area more frequently. Also on hand was Artie Donovan, the 85-year-old NFL Hall of Fame tackle who was a guest of Frank Culotta, Villanova’s biggest alum and supporter in the Baltimore area. Wright admitted that in younger days he was a big fan of the old Baltimore Colts who featured players like Donovan and Jay’s favorite, the great quarterback John Unitas.

Attached is a photo of Jay with two ‘09 grads — Tom O’Keefe (left), who is doing a year of service in Baltimore inner city schools, and Sarah Klein-Harris, who recently signed on as a nurse at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center.
