Big East Player of the Year Goes To…

Wesley Johnson of Syracuse.  I am absolutely stunned, as I thought Scottie Reynolds was a virtual lock for this award.  This honestly may have come down to one shot.  If Scottie nails the game-winning 3 ball on Saturday against West Virginia, he adds to his impressive year and probably wins the award.  Regardless, though, Reynolds should have won.  In the end, think about it this way.  This snub should piss the heck out of not only Scottie, but the team, the coaching staff, and the fans.  Let’s hope Scottie uses it as motivation and goes out there and proves why he truly is the Big East Player of the Year.  If he can get on a roll, the rest of the team should be inspired, which could allow them to gain some momentum.  In reality, as Scottie goes, the team goes.  Other notable awards coming out of the Big East today were Jim Boeheim for Big East Coach of the Year and Lance Stephenson for Big East Rookie of the Year.

Without Scottie this is a bubble team. I dont even think Johnson is SU’s most important player, i think Rautins is.

Its a joke.
Sure Wesley is a good player but not the most valuable.

If I were Pitt Jamie Dixon really got snubbed here as well.

No he didn’t. Boeheim took a team many expected to not be in the Top 25 and has them looking strong for a National Title.

He’s the National Coach of the Year, let alone the BIG EAST.

I know this a Villanova blog, but I think we need to look at this objectively. Scottie has had an amazing year, and as Villanova fans, our hearts were pulling for him to win. However, I would never consider that Scottie was a “lock” for this award. Every college basketball writer that I have seen give out these awards, has given it to Johnson (plus made Johnson 1st Team All American). I am not saying I 100% agree, but professionals that follow college basketball objectively for a living everyday think Johnson is the BE POY, it has to count for something. I honestly can’t say how good Johnson is, I only say him for 1 full game, plus a few minutes here or there. I would consider the two guys stats comparable.

Also, I don’t think the award is Big East Most Valuable Player. If it were, I would never debate against Scottie. The award is Big East Player of the Year. For that, I think you have to ask “Who was the best player in the Big East this year?” Is that still Scottie?

Ultimately Scottie is taking the fall here for the team’s lackluster finish.

Come on NOVA fans….let’s not go there. Follow’s Scottie lead on this and lets focus on the BE Tournament and the Big Dance.

“If Reynolds was disappointed, the 6-2 senior guard did not show it. He was his normal, cordial self as he addressed the media before practice.”

“Yeah, I think that would be any player who took their team to win in a league that’s been very good all year,” Reynolds said. “They’re very deserving of that. I wouldn’t just say that about myself. I would say that about anybody that put their team in that position.”

Yeah, but it’s still crap. It’s a load of crap, in fact. Syracuse might be the team of the year and Boeheim the coach of the year, but that doesn’t make Johnson the player of the year by default. He’s having a good but not statistically overwhelming season; Syracuse is one of those “the whole is greater than the sum of their parts” teams like we were last year. This award is comparable, statistically and otherwise, to Dante getting the award for his work last year (with the exception that Johnson will probably be a lottery pick — to which I say, “Whoopdeedoo,” this is college ball).

This is a load of horse hockey. I would thoroughly enjoy the Cats steamrolling through the BE tourney with Scottie going for 35 at least once now, just to exorcise this horrible bitterness that I have.

You look at the talent levels on the team. Losing Devendorf/Harris/Flynn was a great group of talent however what cuse brought in was head over heels better than Pitts roster and recruitment for 2010.

Boeheim did a nice job putting together a bunch of 4 and 5 stars into a elite program. Pitt had to make 3 stars become a top program after losing what I would agrue as a more talented group than what Cuse lost in Blair/Fields/and old big lips.

Horse hockey indeed!

I dont think anybody on Syracuse’s roster was highly recruited. Say what you want about Boeheim and Syracuse but i’m very impressed with how well they play together. Also, isnt recruiting part of being a successful coach?

I’m not saying Boeheim doesn’t deserve coach of the year, because he most certainly does. I’m saying that Johnson doesn’t get POY because there was some void where a suitable candidate could be drawn from so that it would make sense to just take the best player from the best team.

I’m not angry that Scottie didn’t win. If it was to go to a ‘Cuse player, it should’ve been Rautins. Johnson was very good for them early on, but Rautins has been their best player the whole year. Rautins is the one who got snubbed.

I have no issue with coach of the year. It was either him or Dixon.

Still sucks about Scottie though. This team could have used the boost to their psyche after the past couple weeks. Let’s hope it still provides a lot of motivation. Being from Syracuse and having a lot of friends that are now SU alums, I’d love another crack at them.
