Is the Ship Officially Sinking?

Well, after another loss where the weaknesses stuck out like a sore thumb again, there is definitely a panic inside the Villanova camp.  Jay Wright might not admit it, the players might not admit it, fans might not admit it, but this team is spiraling downward at a rapid rate.  I’m not going to solely focus on yesterday’s debacle against the Mountaineers, because the problems of this team have been glaring for the last month or so.  I’m obviously not an expert, but I feel the need to call out some people, so take a look below.

In no particular order:

1.  Jay Wright-The man who has turned this program around is starting to bother me a little.  Without a doubt, the officiating has been extremely bad this year, but every time I look over, Jay is complaining about something to the referees.  At some point, the attention of the man in charge has to turn to his own players.  Instead of berating the refs for the full 40 minutes, even though they usually deserve it, Wright needs to start actually teaching and making adjustments during the game.  Second, the rotation has to be cut down to a set 8 or 9, unless dire circumstances warrant otherwise.  Playing 11 guys in the postseason is not going to work in my opinion.  Nobody can get into the flow of the game, and furthermore, most of the players never know how much they are going to play each game.  This may seem like good motivation, especially for the young guys, but I think it’s starting to mess with the chemistry of the squad.  One last thing–stop getting technicals Jay.  He must have around 8 T’s this season, which is not ok.

2.  Maurice Sutton-Plain and simple, he should not be on the floor for meaningful minutes, unless there is extreme foul trouble.

3.  Maalik Wayns-The excuse may be that he’s only a freshman, but his reckless play is an issue now.  Sure, we saw flashes of brilliance early in the season, and there’s no doubt he has the potential to be a star on the Main Line, but other teams are figuring the youngster out.  They know he will force just about any shot and is prone to turnovers.  Thus, opponents are more than happy to let him make one spectactular play, which will usually be coupled with multiple turnovers and errant shots.  We need him to create, but turning the ball over every other possession doesn’t cut it.

4.  Taylor King-There are far more serious concerns with King than on the basketball court.  I heard from a friend that King has been suspended for academic reasons, but this may just be a cover up, as he might have got caught smoking weed.  Again, this is not confirmed, so don’t hold me to it.  On the hardwood, it’s all in King’s head in terms of his offense.  His shot is obviously not falling, and it’s screwing up his psyche.  If he gets the chance to play again this season, I still think he can be a valuable asset with his rebounding and defense, both of which have been surprisingly stellar this season for a team that has not done well in these categories.

5.  Reggie Redding-The senior was never an offensive star in college, but he hasn’t produced at all when the Cats have the ball.  He can take it to the hole, we have all seen it before, but not so much this year.  I’m not asking Redding to light up the scoreboard, but at least look like you’re a part of the offense and create something for your teammates every once in awhile.

6.  Corey Stokes and Antonio Pena-Lumping these two together stems from their lack of consistency.  Both are extremely talented players with the ability to take over games singlehandedly, but they never seem to put back-to-back solid games together or even a full 40 minutes.  For example, Stokes will hit a couple of trey balls early on in a game, but then he disappears for long stretches.  Pena looks dominant one game and then comes up with a dud the next.  Stokes probably deserves to be called out more than Pena, but if Villanova is going to get back on track, these two will be need to be vital cogs.

7.  Fans in attendance-This includes myself.  Each of the games I’ve been to seemed to have a noticeable lack of energy in the building compared to years past.  Obviously, there’s a pass for yesterday’s game with the students still on Spring Break, but passionate fans really can energize a team.  Now is not the time to desert this team, rather their struggles should motivate us even more to maybe make a difference in propelling the Cats back into form.

Some may think I’m being too harsh or just flat out wrong, but this is just how I see it right now.  One person/one issue is not the sole reason for the lackluster performances recently, but when all of the problems are combined, the Cats do not play like we expect them to play.  At this very moment, my optimism is dwindling, but I still have hope that this team can turn it around and make a run over the next few weeks.  One thing is for sure: we will definitely find out what these group of Wildcats are made of in the very near future.

I’ll end this post on a positive note by mentioning the Wildcats who earned 2010 Big East Honors.

Scottie Reynolds-First Team

Corey Fisher-Third Team

Maalik Wayns-All Rookie Team

This is probably Wright’s worst coaching job since he took over. Part of it is a product of raised (unfair?) expectations, and part of it is unfortunate circumstances (Reggie’s suspension and Mouph’s illness) but I couldnt agree more with most of your points.

I think last year’s team spoiled us all. It was a special group where each guy had clearly defined roles and they all played well together. And they really only had 8 guys all year after Drummond and Grant transferred.

Good post. I’ve been trying to refrain from going off but that’s all I really want to do right now. So, so frustrating to watch.

I think you are seeing the product of a young team, that Jay has treat like the FL squads in 2006-7. Sadly after the starters, we don’t have experience. We have talent, but not experience. Sutton, King, Wayans, Cheek, Yarou, Armwood have never played a full season in the Big East. Pena and Stokes have had flashes…but not consistency. The book is out on Nova…shut down Nova and crash the boards. Eventually we will get frustrated and our opponent will be in the double bonus with 15 to go in the 2nd.

I am extremely hopeful for this squad. I hope they can put it together and have a great run in both tourneys. These recent losses have been so frustrating as they seem to be self inflicted by stupid fouls, mental breakdowns, and giving away points. I think this leads back to the coach and I think Jay can and will do a better job…

Inexperience is just not a good enough excuse. Look at Kentucky. You can win with freshmen STARTING, much less coming off the bench. This was a highly regarded freshman class that has not lived up to expectations. Hopefully they’ll learn from the experiences and improve next season.

I am glad you put the spotlight on Jay. Respectfully, of course, he has mismanaged this squad. In the past, his team were built around undersized and undertalented palyers that he got to FIGHT for rebounds and play lock down defense. He always gave guys the freedom on the offensive side for hustle and effort on D and the boards. It worked really well and was great to watch.

With this year’s team, I see more offensive and athletic talent that Villanova is accustomed too. It’s really a testament to the job Jay has done up to this point. But he got off track and the glamour of his athletes has blurred his vision. The defense is swiss cheese, the hustle isn’t there and while VU is the #2 scoring offense in the nation, it’s evident to fans that this is no way to succeed in the post season tourneys.

STOP this 3 quarter court press; I haven’t seen a turnover all year from it. STOP trapping up top; we don’t have the big guys to support the back line. STOP juggling lineups according to matchups; make each and every guy get it done, no matter the matchup. STOP playing Taylor King; he’s talented but his skills come in the wrong package. He’s a slow 3 at best, certainly hurting the team at 4. STOP taking this team out of Scottie’s and Corey’s hands. Teams that win in the NCAAs have experienced guard play and play great defense. We have the starting guards. Get the D on track and fast. STOP fouling! STOP running the same inbound play every time, every game, every year.

I understand the frustration from everyone. I’m frustrated too. However, if I told you before the season, ‘Nova would finish in the top four of the Big East (tied for 2nd) and we would lose to the following teams: Temple (on the road); Pitt (on the road); G’Town (on the road); UConn (at the Wachovia Center); ‘Cuse (on the road); and WVU (at the Wachovia Center); would you have been happy? 6 losses to at least 5 tournament teams. Oh, and not just tournament teams, but all, except maybe UConn, a 5 seed or higher.

Right now this team beats the bad and medicore teams (except UConn) and losses to teams as good as them or better. I’ll take that. It probably means this isn’t a final four team, but it is likely a Sweet 16 team.

We see the problems with playing so many guys right around the 11 minute mark of the first half. The starters establish a good offensive rhythm, which disappears once musical chairs subbing begins. Partly this is Jay’s fault and partly guys like Stokes and Redding getting into foul trouble early. This team commits way too many off the ball fouls and fouls in the back court. This team is aggressive, which is a good thing, but it isn’t smart, which is a bad thing.

One more thing. I was at ‘Nova for the Steve Lappas years. It’s really nice to “complain” about good teams than the crap we had when I was in school.

I don’t think the ship is sinking, BUT it has certainly lost a little forward momentum while others are building some.

I don’t want to see this dance if we play these guys again.

The ship isn’t sinking. It may be off-course, but it isn’t sinking. That being said, at this point I would consider a Sweet Sixteen berth a qualified success.

Next year we get 3 new players while losing 2. We need to figure this depth thing out, quickly.

Who ever wants to get on Jay Wright’s case for mismanaging 5 freshmen 1 transfer to go along with the core of Stokes/Scottie/Tone/Reggie/Fish you need to take a giant step back (think Les Grossman, Tropic Thunder).

He’s one of the best coaches in the game, period. We have played all season for the next 4 weeks, then lets judge how our leader is doing.

Jay’s got this team playing better than Roy Williams has his team playing. That’s got to count for something.

If Scottie Reynolds had turned pro, Nova would be in the bottom half of the Big East. They need to grow up in a hurry for next year. You have to remember that when they play outside teams in Tournament, all the losses in the Big East will become a benefit. They are not a great team, but definitely a team that can do some damage. I agree with two points for sure, Jay, just coach your team. Officiating is awful on all three levels, D-1,2 And 3. It is time to limit how many games they can do a week and also reteach them all what traveling is, it is ruining the game.

Lets not forget we have mainly been losing to good teams. There could be a silver lining as well: Lunardi has us as a #3 seed in a bracket with Duke (#1) and Purdue (#2). This would be a dream come true. (altough this obviously may not be the hand we are dealt on selection Sunday).

That’s just silly.

But @Ryan Mac — Getting to play Duke would be a dream scenario. Thinking about the game last year in Boston still makes me smile.

The absence of Taylor King, literally against WVU, figuratively for the last 5 weeks, has me worried. His ability to draw bigger defenders away from the basket really opens up the lanes for the guards. In the last 3 games, teams have played a great deal of zone against the Cats, and the offense has looked ineffective for long stretches. Wanys, Cheek, and even Fisher have had a hard time getting to the rack. In order for the Cats to make another run at the Final Four they need to open things up for the guards. I think King is a big part of that.

Random thoughts–

It’s probably too late to put in (teach) and maybe I’m all wet BUT

How about a double post offense–Pena and Mouph-(Subs Armwood and Mo) PG-Fish or Scottie, Wings Stokes and Cheek (Subs Redding, Wayns) A lineup better for taller teams like maybe ‘Cuse or Kansas. And because we don’t have a Dante.

A perfect set against a 2-3 zone because it’s an odd man front. If played right it can open seams to drive and finish or assist to a big guy for a rim finish or kick for a mid range jumper. Better floor balance for rebounds. Guards are back to defend a team who wants to push–speaking of which I think we should do most times rather than walk it up. That doesn’t necessarily mean shoot it in 10-12 seconds if we go into the set, but we have depth and can wear people out. I also don’t want to live and die by the 3 ball.

Dumb or what?

I like the idea but I don’t see them testing out something so new this late in the season.

Chocolate Thunder

Yeah, not a bad idea, but it’s just entirely too late to get something underway. You had Redding coming off the bench, and while that will probably never happen either, I think it’s probably a necessity at this point. Dude has absolutely disappeared in the past couple of games. Where’s the Reggie who just came back after suspension? The guy throwing up 15 points and 9 rebounds? It’s frustrating to watch. Get him coming off the bench to be the defensive stopper that he is, and let a big lineup like Scottie/Fish/Stokes (although dude has been as much of a question mark–he’ll at least attempt shots)/Pena/Mouph run.
