Lots at stake on the line tomorrow for both Villanova and West Virginia: #8 vs. #9, NCAA Tournament seeding, Big East Tournament seeding, possible revenge for the Mountaineers.  We have been waiting for this game for awhile now.  Below are some articles in anticipation of the big showdown.

-Villanova’s rematch with West Virginia has large implications

-Villanova story awaits final chapter

-Rested WVU to battle Villanova

-Jay Bilas analyzes the matchup as a part of ESPN’s Weekend Watch

I am excited to be going to the game tomorrow, but I read that Gus Johnson is calling the game on CBS, which pisses me off that I won’t be able to hear him on TV.  Johnson and Bill Raftery have the best college hoops voices by far.  If you have never heard Gus’ “Rise and Fire” youtube video, please do so ASAP; it’s flat out awesome.

So that wasn’t great.

I’ll admit that seeing the game live with no replay, it looked like Scottie didn’t get the last shot off in time. Had it gone in and been discounted, I would have been far more bummed than how it played out.

The offense is just straight anemic. The dribble drive has come to a complete stop, and the threes are not falling. I’ve got faith in Jay, but I’ve got to say I’m apprehensive about our tournament chances.

Oh, and the fact that West Virginia was in the bonus with goddamned 14 minutes to play in the second half is absolutely preposterous. Officials have lost their damn minds.

Hey, typical BE game.

One of our 3’s drop, we make a couple of more FT’s or another 2 and a FT–we win. This game could have gone either way. Anybody who thought we were going to hold WVU to 16 pts the second 1/2 or even 25-30 ain’t playing with a full deck.

Disappointing to lose, sure, any loss is. Could you point to a couple of plays you’d like to have back or see things done differently, sure, so could WVU.

There is NO reason not to think we can’t win the BE tournament. WE CAN. Which includes beating ‘Cuse.

And there is no reason to think we can’t make a deep tournament run–including winning it all. I don’t care what stats say, or the record of the last 6 games. That stuff is history and NOT predictive of what’s to come. Just use that stuff to tweak the game plan and go play the damned game. The ‘85 team did.

Damn i wish i could be that optimistic. Nothing i’ve seen in the last 9 games suggests that this team is capable of making a deep run. At this point i’d be happy with another Sweet 16. Thrilled even.

The ‘85 team were an experienced unit who knew their roles exactly and had both total unity and an uncompromising game plan. Those are not characteristics of this team. I can’t say we’re really fully using our depth to our advantage. I’m hopeful, but sadly, not terribly optimistic. I would think a Sweet Sixteen berth would qualify as a success, however incongruous it is with the early season hype.
