Coming Down the Home Stretch

It’s seriously hard to believe that we are two and a half weeks away from the regular season finale, three and a half weeks until Selection Sunday, and just four weeks away from the start of the NCAA Tournament.  The college basketball season really does fly, so we need to enjoy what’s left of it.  Obviously, the level of enjoyment will depend on how Villanova performs over this next month and a half.  If they continue to play like they did on Monday night against Connecticut, there will be a lot of disgruntled Wildcat fans.  However, I really do not foresee another debacle like that where there was virtually no energy, no passion, no adjustments, and no intelligence.  Practice this week could not have been fun, as Jay Wright must have let some steam out with the goal of getting his team re-focused on the task at hand.  Although a very tough schedule lay ahead, there is no reason to expect this team will not rebound.  One of the hallmarks of Wright’s teams over the years has been to come back with a solid game after a loss.  I expect nothing less this Sunday at the Pedersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.  With a long way until that contest though, here are some interesting articles/video clips to get you through the week.

-All-Access with referee Tim Higgins  (have a feeling this article has sparked some emotion from Big East fans)

-Andy Katz’s Daily Word: Committee criterion still in eye of beholder

-Forde Minutes: 40 names, games, and minutiae making news in college hoops

-Villanova Video Clips from CSN Philly (this link will take you to the video page for Comcast SportsNet…click on the SPORTSNITE tab and the clips are from 2/15)

I’m heading out to Pittsburgh for the weekend and I’m sure I’ll annoy some of the “Zoo” fans. Should be fun. Since I’ll be there, I’ll take Nova with whatever the spread is (Should be close to a pickem).

No pick’em for Sunday as it is a noon game. You’re lucky though, that’s a fun arena and we’re all stuck listening to Verne Lundquist and Clark Kellogg.

Chris – at least no Doris Burke (sp?). Big test for Nova. I really want to go into that ‘Cuse game with only 2 conference losses.

After flipping between the Pitt and Cuse games last night, I’m feeling better about Sunday.

I think we’re too talented for Pitt, although our defense needs to play like it did against WV and we definitely need to shoot the ball better.

Pitt is going to try to make it a scrap, and probably be successful to a certain degree. We’ll need a lot more toughness than we showed against UConn.

Chris – I agree. Pitt will be up for the game as will the crowd. Revenge, etc. blah blah for the elite 8 game. Pitt may be too pumped, which could work to our advantage.

As respects ‘Cuse, we should be able to take advantage of Trishe and Jardine. They are ‘Cuse’s weak link.

Agreed on Triche and Jardine but they have a fierce frontline. Rick Jackson has really improved and if Onuaku can stay out of foul trouble it could be a long night for us.

I didn’t realize how great of a shot-blocker Wes Johnson was either. Great weakside-help defender.

Yes, Jackson and Onuaku will be a handful. If Onuaku catches it wihtin 8 feet I would just foul him. Make him earn two at the line. Armwood, Sutton, Pena, and Mouph have plenty of fouls to give. Of course, the odds of Pena fouling out are high in any game.

Fisher, Reynolds and Lil Wayans will need to avoid getting too deep on their drives.

The Pitt game worries me.
