‘Nova gets the win in hostile territory!

Game just ended at 9:18 p.m. ET. Villanova went into hostile territory and defeated West Virginia 82-75 and in the process shook off their first conference loss on Saturday and snapped the Mountaineers 6-game win streak. I only got to see the 2nd half (yes, I do have DVR and will eventually watch it), but I have to say I was thoroughly impressed with our play after the break.

We carried an 11-point lead into the 2nd half, and despite our shooting cooling off and some terrible, terrible officiating (yes, this time they were directly responsible for an unheard-of 6-point swing), we remained calm and carried out our plan en route to victory in one of the toughest venues in the country (helped out by the coin-throwers being banished, of course).

As I tweeted with a Syracuse blogger, the BIG EAST regular season title clearly runs through Villanova and Syracuse. They are undoubtedly the best two in the conference (the Hoyas are good too, but too many losses so far to compete). That matchup in a few weeks should be nuts.

Some random thoughts on the game:

  • Scottie Reynolds does it again. 21 points and 5 assists and 19 of those came in the 2nd half. He was a perfect 10-10 at the line too. As Raf said, the kid is literally a dagger walking around the court (LOL).
  • Great first half out of Dominic Cheek. Then we barely saw him in the 2nd. Weird, and even though we played great and went with the experience, he deserved to be out there until proven wrong.
  • Corey Fisher has 17 points and I think I only saw him hit a couple of free throws. I heard he had an intentional foul too. I missed all the fun.
  • Reggie Redding was phenomenal down the stretch. THAT is the player we all expected this season. That was Reggie in 2009-Final-Four-Run Mode.
  • Taylor King had 8 rebounds, but not much else. Oh yeah, two brutal fouls. But was phenomenal on the glass, even if his shooting was awful. He was a big reason why we somehow out-rebounded WV.
  • 10 and 9 for Antonio Pena. Raf said he was vital to this machine, and is this year’s Dante Cunningham. Bilas quickly agreed. So do I.
  • Don’t think I remember Maalik Wayns at all. Also weird. He’s usually in the middle of things, one way or the other.
  • Isaiah Armwood was really active. I think I have a mancrush on him. He’s gonna be something special in a couple of years.
  • Unreal defense by the whole team on Da’Sean Butler, but particularly Corey Stokes. He had Butler whining like a friggan baby. Stokes also hit a huge runner late in the game.
  • Good to see Mo Sutton get some good run.
  • I have no idea why Mouphtaou Yarou didn’t play, and it doesn’t make me feel good.

HUGE win on the road. Could be season-defining. That is typical of ‘Nova teams under Jay Wright, to take one on the chin and then 2 days later bounce back and make a statement. It’s why I love this program.

Villanova is off until Saturday when they host Providence downtown. I’m a maybe for the game. Hoping to make it. And also, we’ll have our inaugural guest-post from IBBW’s good friend Andrew Trask. He’s very fired up, to say the least.

Awesome road win tonight-the kids are coming along, and Armwood is emerging. I can see this team becoming a juggernaut come March!

I am mad as hell!!!!! THose refs sucked. Villanova should protest that game with the leauge. I mean come on the tip in was ruled off and they come down hit a 3 it counts and a foul away from the ball before the shot. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!!!

Trust me I am happy we won but I have to vent that was such bull shit.

Someone please tell King not to foul at the end of the game that was pathetic.

Like I said i wouldve been happy with 1-1 on the road trip and I wouldve preferred the win over WVU (they’re closer in the standings and we already beat Gtown this year).

This is a win people will remember when they’re handing out #1 seeds, easily the biggest win on our resume (so far).

Keep in mind last year’s final 4 team got curb-stomped in Morgantown. As a matter of fact this year’s team has already avenged 4 of last year’s 5 losses, with UConn at home next week.

Ugh….King has proven to be miserable at the offensive end. The problem is he’s tall and can rebound so he needs to be out there.

Saw Jay Wright getting interviewed by Bilas after the game – he said he felt bad that Fish got those cheapies because he was not going to be stopped. Also said that he prefered Sutton over Mouph because WVU’s big men were all outside on the perimeter and he likes Mo out there over Mouph. I had a couple moments where I wanted to break things, but all in all an Awesome win for this team! I love me some Armwood too – would’ve liked to see Cheek out there in the second half too, especially after Fish’s 4th. Very happy though

Vinnie I’m not sure that’s fair to say. He’s not “miserable” he’s just struggling right now. Plus, it seems like he cares more about defense and rebounding and takes that more serious than his offense, which is NOT something you can complain about. He’s been very good overall this year.

Great bounce back game. For most of the game the defense was MUCH better than against Georgetown (and WVU’s lousy shooting didn’t help either – but that was in part because the defense rushed them).

I think Wayns didn’t get much time because Fisher was so on and they needed more height to stop WVU on the offensive glass.

Armwood and Cheek were great contributers. King also played well despite his offensive woes. He’s a shooter, and needs more shots to get in a rhythm, so he can get out of his slump.

All in all great effort and huge road win.

Vinnie you bring up a valid point though; our lack of size and experience makes King a must play at times during the game. Personally, I think he’s just hitting a wall right now…. we have to remember that the kid has never (truly) notched a full season (no, the ACC does not count..that league is for fairies) on his belt and had to sit out all of last year.

This is the BEAST friends. Make sure ya bring your chains to the fight.

Also how can Duke be ranked higher than Georgetown? That is a sin. There is no way you can justify that ranking. Duke and North Carolina suck.

Very nice bounce back win. I always tend to underestimate the testicular fortitude of our teams.

Armwood is learning how to use his strengths. Great rebounder and with a little more polish, he will be a great finisher.

Cheek should get some more run. I know he can get lost a little on defense, but he is getting better. He’s a scorer and their press is great with his length on top and when he comes to double.

Stokes played really well too. He’s becoming a pretty good one on one defender. Can Jay keep him motivated if he isn’t getting shots?

The Big East really needs to do something about the refs. They clearly don’t understand offensive fouls and rarely do you get a consistent game. Either call the game close or let them play, they can’t chose which from possession to possession.

Esteban I don’t think motivation is a factor with Stokes. Sure, you can point out tons of duds from him on the offensive end, but I can’t remember a single game where I either saw him moping or I came away thinking he didn’t add value because he’s been a great defender night in and night out, which is what we were hoping from him this year.

Chris – I haven’t seen him moping either. I think it will stay that way, but I am mildly concerned. I slightly disagree about him adding value night in and night out. He will still chuck shots up early in shot clock, which is a pet peeve of mine, but may be Jay encourages it (and no, he isn’t as bad as King in the bad shot dept.) While improving as a defender, he still makes some bad plays or fouls here and there.

Esteban you hit on my main issue with King – it’s not so much he’s in a shooting slump, it’s that his shot selection is brutal. Of course i thought the same thing about Reynolds 2 years ago and look how far he’s come.

It’s going to be tough for him to get the shooting rhythm he likes on this team – just not enough shots to go around. In the meantime I like his hustle and effort, that’s what’s keeping him in the lineup right now. Just needs to be smarter, i know he’s a confident shooter but we’re too good offensively to be wasting possessions with bad shots.

Esteban — Our offense is based on quick shots. He is missing them, sure, but I bet when he makes them you don’t complain.

I think the thing with Corey is that he has really focused on becoming a better defender and rebounder (something we sorely need) whereas he used to be strictly a jump shooter from outside. I’d rather have what we have now with him than what we used to have because we really aren’t lacking offensive firepower.

That’s two games in a row that the reffs have completely shafted us. The Georgetown game was RIDICULOUS! At least we got one of those games. I know Taylor didn’t score and had a really rough time shooting. But that was a good game for him. He bought into Villanova basketball and was diving on the floor, rebounding, just doing everything we need. Good game Taylor! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. We appreciate the way you give it all.

Chris – I complain anytime someone jacks up a shot from 27 feet with 30 seconds on the shot clock, regardless of whether it goes in. Just because a shot goes in doesn’t mean it is a good one. King is a gunner, I realize that, but I think he needs to do a better job of picking his moments. I love his effort on the glass and on defense.

The offense is based on getting good shots quickly. Not just shooting quickly.

I realize I am nit picking. What else can you do with a team that is 21-2? I love the character, effort, and skill of this team. I just wish, at times, they closed out on three point shooters better and were more aware of time and situation before shooting.

Agreed – King just needs to imnprove shot selection. I think he probably gets frustrated and wants to get his shots in, but he has to le the game come to him.

Stokes defense has improved and I was also happy to see him take it to the hole strong a few times. If he can continue to do that, it’s going to let him get off his outside shot a lot easier.

In the end, it’s all about being smart and good shot selection – Soctty’s improvement is a direct result of better shot selection.

Great win for us last night. I was also of the group is OK with going 1-1 these last two games – we ran into a buzz saw in Georgetown but showed out depth against WVU.

I’m not looking ahead (OK, maybe I am a little), but I am SO looking forward to the Nova – Cuse match-up later this month. As an ‘06 graduate from Villanova, and an ‘09 graduate from Syracuse Law, man, this is going to be incredible for me. I went to every Nova game at the Dome during my three years in the great white north, where we did VERY well.

I’ve been getting nothing but heckled from my fellow grad school alum, a lot of whom attended undergraduate schools with no basketball programs and subsequently adopted Cuse as their program. (I also almost got into a street fight with Eric Devendorf late one Friday night on Marshall Street, but I won’t go there.) My point is is that even though this game is going to be huge regardless for both teams fans, it has even more impact for me and I can not wait.

Three games between now and then, but I’m tingling with anticipation… LETS GO CATS.
