-Georgetown back on the national title scene

ORIGINAL:

Game just ended: 2:30 pm eastern time.  Georgetown Hoyas defeat Villanova Wildcats 103-90.  Some notes on the game are below.

-The game started out going back and forth with each team trading buckets for much of the first 8 minutes or so.  Then, things really started to change, as Villanova began turning the ball over and coming up empty on the offensive possessions they did have.  Couple that with Jason Clark and Austin Freeman basically not missing threes, it all added up to a recipe for disaster.

-Although the Hoyas shot lights out in the first half, Villanova wasn’t exactly stifling on the defensive end.  I thought Jay Wright stuck with the press too long.  It takes time off the shot clock for the opponent, but if they can consistently break it, matching up becomes a problem because everyone is scrambling to find their man.  Once Georgetown broke the press, the Cats did not get to their man in time, leaving Clark and Freeman wide open for threes.

-Halftime score: Georgetown 50 Villanova 31

-Obviously, being down 19 at the half is not an insurmountable lead for this Villanova squad, because they can score in bunches, so it seemed like a matter of time before the Cats made a run.

-The visitors cut the deficit to about 12 on multiple occasions, but each time, Georgetown responded with some clutch buckets.

-All in all, Villanova didn’t play good defense, but honestly, no one was beating Georgetown today.  They were pretty much unconscious all game, mostly from beyond the arc.  It wasn’t just one guy either, like the Seton Hall game with Jeremy Hazell, rather the whole G’town team was locked in.

-I’ll end by mentioning the horrendous job by the refs, but this was not the difference in the game.  No excuses.  Georgetown was the better team today and deserved to win.

Nobody wants to lose, especially to archrival Georgetown, but this is not the end of the world.  Villanova was due for a clunker, and Georgetown is no slouch.  Like I texted my dad at one point during the game, “Better now than March.”

Refs were horrendous but agreed, no one was beating Gtown today the way they were shooting it from 3

Right now this team is just not a good defensive team. Say what you want about the refs but this team has a reputation for fouling too much that they’ve earned. I’m getting a little sick of the 2:30 games myself.

Combine terrible officiating, red hot shooting by Georgetown, and Doris Burke on the microphone and this is a recipe for disaster. I have to say though, I thought the worst part of watching the game was Doris Burke not the fact that nova lost.

Had a feeling that we would drop this one. The three point shooting and lax defense left us with little shot of coming back.

Hopefully Jay will pound the lessons learned from this game into the squad and they come out on Monday with some tough ‘D’ against WVU.

Georgetown attempted 50 free throws for the game, while Villanova attempted 23. That sums up the bad officiating.

If Lunch Lady Doris never does another Nova game again, it’ll be too soon. My wife thinks she sounds like Sean Connery.

Only thing that made me sicker than (1) the officiating and (2) Doris Burke WAS having to view “Stretch” Pelosi! I had to hurl.

THis is not a dissapointment fellow nova fans!! this shows that if a team is gonna beat us they have to score 100 pts to do so. The Syracuse game will be Nova’s day of redemption and show Andy Kats who rules college basketball….THe Lengend..Jay Wright

Georgetown has as much chance of winning a national title as Snookie does getting elected president. Give me a break.

Yeah, the moral of the story here is that Villanova is going to get theirs, and to beat us, you’re going to have to score 100 and shoot the lights out. Not great, but at least a postive way to look at it

Guys – let’s get real here, this was not a good game for Nova. The reason the Hoyas were red hot is because they were OPEN 3’s. Good shooters hit open 3’s. When Stokes and King get open looks of good sets they nail them. They only miss when they start launching 28 footers or have pressure on them.

We have a lot of talent so we overcome our deficits against weaker team but when we play a more talented team like Georgetown we are exploited by our weak defense. Sorry to say our defense is weak. I think Jay Wright’s philosophy has always been pressure the ball and yeah you may give up some open looks but in the end you gain more than you lose. For the most part it has worked, but they have to find a way to adjust. Hey, we’re still a great team, but I’m just saying you can’t say “no one would have beat Georgetown tonight”. They were hot because we gave them the open looks – a better defensive effort could have beaten them.

I agree with you on most points J92. I harped on the idea that Villanova’s defense was terrible, as they gave the Hoyas too many open looks. Jay felt that the way to get back into the game was to continue to press and try to force turnovers, but the Hoyas were breaking it for the most part. Thus, Villanova had to scramble to find their men, but Clark and Freeman were just on tonight. True, the Nova defense was bad, but when do you ever see Georgetown put up 50 points in a half and 100+ in a game, regardless of porous defense. I can’t remember the last time the Hoyas did this, so I think the Hoyas would have beaten 98% of the teams in the country today. Unfortunately, it happens and it happened against a team that most Villanovans despise.

Instant poll – So, given the choice, who would you rather have as a Mother-in-Law: Doris Burke or Nancy Pelosi??? You have to pick one.

I’ll be writing something up on this game, but for right now I’ll just say — that was a perfect storm type scenario.

We’re better than we played, the refs were bad (weren’t the difference), and as my buddy Andrew at Casual Hoya said, it was Cocaine Night at The Verizon Center. Nobody in the country beats them the way they shot the ball today.

The 3 point defense continues to be on the wrong side of suck. I would like to see more of Cheek and less of Stokes. He gives more effort and is better on top of the press.

The officials were horrible (not the reason for the loss). The Big East is great, but the officials… have no idea what an offensive foul is. Too often an offensive foul is called when there should be a no call. Way too many “anticipation” calls.

I still respectfully disagree. Both Freeman and Clark shoot well over 40% from 3 point range. I still say they were this hot because they were that open. I agree about Cheek/Stokes.

They were open in part because the weakside rotation was slow on passes over the top. It has been a problem all year. I’m kind of old school – when a player is hot I think you need to fould him hard (not dirty) and knock him off his spots. This team doesn’t do that.
