Game just ended at 9:09 p.m. ET. Villanova defeats Notre Dame 90-72 to move to 19-1, which is the best start in school history! Villanova overcame a sloppy 1st half where they were constantly letting the Irish stick around to absolutely destroy Mike Brey’s boys in a 2nd half where the Wildcats truly imposed their will.

I’m going to say right now, I didn’t get in until late in the 1st half, so I can’t really comment on what went on (please let me know in the comments), but from what I was hearing from Jay Bilas and Sean McDonough, we played incredibly sloppy and couldn’t slow down Luke Harangody, who had 16 points in the opening 20 minutes.

I will say this about the 2nd half though – it was phenomenal. After a sluggish star to the half the team really turned up the defensive pressure and got back to what they do best – run, and run some more. Notre Dame had no chance once this game plan fell into place. Some more thoughts:

  • We ended the game on a 30-something to 15-ish run. It was beautiful to watch.
  • The students really wanted Scottie Reynolds to hit 2,000 tonight. They were going nuts at the end when he went on a personal 7-0 run. He finished 7 points shy. On the bright side, he’ll get that in The Pavilion, which I think makes it more special.
  • Corey Fisher was outstanding. At one point, he left an ND defender 5 feet behind him with a simple head fake, that drew roars (and laughter) from the crowd, and Jay Bilas.
  • Antonio Peña was a friggan beast tonight. A double-double with 14 and 11, and he neutralized Harangody in the 2nd half. One of the best games of his career.
  • Wayns, Redding and Stokes were all solid. Stokes is getting his shooting touch back I think. Redding was great defending Harangody and had some “old-man” plays as Bilas described him where he simply out-thought everyone else to get an easy hoop.
  • Taylor King hit a couple of deeeeeep 3’s, and played his usual tough defense and drew some great charges on the Irish.
  • Ben Hansbrough fouling out early in the 2nd half was huge. Brey is an idiot though. It was a 5 point game and he put him in with 4 fouls. Talk about mismanaging one of your best players. On the bright side for Ben though, I don’t hate him like I did his brother.
  • Quiet games from Armwood, Cheek and Yarou. Who knows?

Vilalnova returns to action next Tuesday when they host Seton Hall at The Pavilion. Corey Fisher has a shot at 1,000 points for his career, and Scottie Reynolds looks to make it 2,000 for his sensational career at ‘Nova.

Another win, I have a feeling we could be #1 by Monday. Very exciting game and you just had that feeling we will not be denied. Notre Dame’s defense sucks both in football and basketball.

I think soon it will be time for Scottie to pass this team over to Corey Fisher. What a move in the 2nd half even Bilas was like wow. This team can get scary good. Go Nova!!!!

Agreed, we can be scary good. We haven’t put a full-game together in a while (Rutgers doesn’t count they suck).

The first half sucked. I think we got whistled for about 50 fouls. Honestly they looked like they were going through the motions at times. Jay went to his bench early and often (partly due to foul trouble). Luckily because of our depth and ND’s inability to hit FT’s, the fouls didnt hurt us. Just an ugly first half.

Geez, really? What a bad error. I could have sworn I saw Sunday. In fact I’m still convinced they moved this game recently lol

Yeah it’s weird they dont play a game this wknd. Ah well, if KU loses we could be #1 next week!

I agree with Vinnie I bet KU will lose. Actually I am bored so I am thinking after the national championship this year I think Nova can win two in a row. Especially if Corey Fisher stays. I mean look at next years starting lineup. Fisher and Wayns at guard. Forwards we have Tone and Stokes with Mouph in the middle. King, Cheek et al others off the bench. Are you kidding this can happen.

I know i am getting a little bit ahead of myself but two meetings canceled today so i have time to ponder these things. Go Nova!!

Even as a fan, I think it’s a mistake to start thinking about such things. Obviously, we are all excited and rightfully so, but we need to take the season one game at a time. The Cats have a very tough schedule coming up, which will really test this team.

People are already saying this year’s team is better than last year’s. Way too soon to say that. Last year’s team won 13 games and finished 4th in a LOADED Big East, then made the F4 steamrolling Duke and UCLA and knocking off a very good Pitt team.

This year’s team has taken advantage of a weak early-conference schedule. The bottom half of the Big East is really weak. If we can get through the back 9 with only 2 or 3 losses I will be VERY impressed and then we can start the comparisons to last year’s team.

Vinnie hit the nail on the head. We’re all happy to be 8-0 right now but let’s be honest, we are just about to end the cakewalk part of the conference so to speak.

We did winning these games, as we should have. But trips to Georgetown, Pitt, Syracuse and West Virginia are on the horizon and we still have home dates with WV and UConn. We could easily lose every single one of those games.

If we get out with a 3-3 record from those 6, I’m not upset. 4-2 and I’m ecstatic. Anything better and someone else may have to take over the blog cause my heart will have exploded.

listen I know reality but I am calling it now and i think this team is really really good. Have u ever seen 3 guys drive and finish like our guards.

Also whats with Knight and Vitale saying the word Villanova my god they give us no credit at all. I use to like those guys but come on its obvious they have issues with Nova.

On the bright side – anybody notice how we’re starting to get the Duke treatment? We’re getting mentioned on the air during other teams’ games. I saw it twice this week – during Cuse-GTown and (gasp!) Duke-Florida St. Good times for the program.

I also heard the Cats being mentioned on WFAN New York (my favorite sports radio station) today.

Vitale just has a hard-on for the ACC. Always has, always will. Despite the fact that the BIG EAST destroys the ACC in the Tourney every year.

(Not to mention our beatdown of Duke last year and he still thinks their guards are better — and we return all our guards!)

Bobby K on the other hand likes us from what I can tell. During the K-State win over Texas he was raving about us.

Brian who was talking about them?

I am glad to hear about that…..maybe i was jumping the gun……also i cant stand the raves that shcyur(sp) the duke guard is getting. Give me a break our guards will destroy him, he will be so lost trying to cover our guys. I watched the Duke game as well and my goodness all Zoubek has to do is touch the ball and wow he is ubelievable!!!! I wanted to throw listening dick head vitale and watching duke. Duke sucks!

Beningo and Roberts. They were talking about the St. John’s-Pitt game tonight. Then,

Joe: “Bro, how about Villanova?”
Evan: “I know. They could be #1 if Kansas State upends Kansas on Saturday.”

Joey B loves Jay Wright and ‘Nova. Evan is a pretty big Seton Hall guy if I remember correctly.

Benigno says one of the best “bro’s” in the business.

Beningo is good. He use to be a caller on the overnight show and kept calling and then got a shot hosting the over night.

Maybe we can get an incoming freshman to keep score.

Don’t sleep on Yarou, Cheeks or Armwood. I know you have love for those guys cause you are a Nova fan. But if I wasn’t a Nova fan, I’d still be high on all three of them. I love that Jay can bring them along at their own pace. I agree with most that Yarou and Cheek are both going to be pros, and I think Armwood is a four year Nova baller that might go down as one of our best players EVER!

Dickie V giving Nova the two spot on the power rankings, amazing. Pretty pissed at Dana O’neil though for putting us fourth. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/powerranking?season=2010&week=12&pollId=1&show=last

Dickie does love our guards. Surprised he put us that high though.

Gotta wonder if Jay’s going to shorten the rotation any time soon. You know Scottie’s going to get more than 29 min a game in the tournament.
