The Game: #3 Villanova (8-0) at The Assholes from down the street (3-4)

The biggest asshole of all. Somebody just kill it already.

The biggest asshole of all. Somebody just kill it already.

Location: The famed Palestra in Philadelphia, PA

Time: 9:00 p.m. ET

Broadcast: ESPN2

Brief Rundown: ‘Nova went into Washington D.C. and took care of Maryland in what many considered to be their toughest OOC game of the year. They held “star” guard Greivis Vasquez in check and rained 3-pointer after 3-pointer down upon the Terps’ heads in a 95-86 victory in what was a solid test for this young but talented team.

The Assholes, on the other hand, have lost 4 in a row to perennial powerhouses including DePaul, Rider, and Cornell. I don’t really have much else on them, because I honestly don’t care for them.

Villanova took last season’s War 59-56 in what was both a great comeback and a terribly blown lead by each team respectively. The Assholes last won this matchup in 2008, which was also the last time in was played at The Palestra.

What I Want To See: Idiot students crying in HD, Antonio Peña continuing his dominance down low, and our vaunted backcourt showing The Assholes their hind parts all night as they blow by them on the way to the hoop . And a 50-point win. But I’ll settle for any win. Put me on suicide watch if we lose.

I want to see the St. Joes students unfurling their “Hawk Will Never Die” banner right as we hit the shot that puts the game on ice (as has happened so many times before).

Dear Hawk-fans: It’s not too late to transfer to Hamburger University… the credits from that school are more widely recognized anyway.

Wow…the St. Joes animosity. Believe me, I am no St. Joes lover. I have done my fair share of ‘The Hawk is Dead’ chants. I thoroughly enjoyed the game last year when they had to destroy the banner after they had unfurled it.

But, I remember when this wasn’t even considered our rivalry. They wanted it more than us and it made their season if they won. We play the creme de la creme of college basketball…I just don’t see this as a big rivalry. I do love to pound them in the dirt to remind them of that, but I don’t have the same animosity.

There have been some “incidents” in recent years that have re-fueled the fire.

This is really the only Big 5 game I care about, and I find myself caring because they treat it like the Super Bowl.

I was fortunate enough to get one of the only 100 tickets Nova students to this game. I am unbelievably excited. Believe me, I will make myself heard

Man you’re a lucky guy. I only went to the Palestra once while I was at ‘Nova (went to the ticket office and said it was my birthday (it was) and they gave me a ticket.

Have fun tonight. It’s gonna be wild in there.

I agree with Seamus. I don’t consider this the rivalry that the st. joe’s kids do. Its kind of like Yankees / Mets for those NY’ers out there. I know this being a Mets fan. We hate the Yanks and get all fired up to play and beat them. But they don’t really give two shits we are just another team to stomp on.

As a ‘Nova fan I get a lot more excited for Uconn, ‘Cuse and Pitt games. Uconn being the team and fanbase I have the most animosity for. St. Joe’s in kinda like the that small drunk guy in the bar with beer muscles, you laugh at him and then dispose of him.

That being said, it does provide for a great atmosphere. One of my favorite ‘Nova games I ever attended was the 2006 Nova / St. Joe’s game at the palestra. It was the 50th anniversary and they split the arena 50/50. Nova was down improbably by 12 at half. Then lead by Kyle’s 17 in the 2nd half we crapped on them. It was a ferocious atmosphere and a wonderful win. 6 days later we’d beat Uconn at the WAC … an insane week to be a ‘Nova fan in the crowd to say the least.
