Some more Jayvaughn Pinkston coverage for you today as Adam Zagoria wrote a really nice column about the newest member of ‘Nova Nation. In case you missed it last night, the 6′6″ Brooklyn native committed to Jay Wright and becomes the 3rd member of the Wildcats’ 2010 recruiting class.

In the article, several experts have glowing reviews of Pinkston’s game, even going as far to compare him to a former NBA great:

“He’s a Jamal Mashburn clone,” said New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski. “He has very soft hands. He has very good skill with the ball. He can handle the ball on the perimeter. He’s not going to guard a perimeter player right now. He can pass the ball, can get to the basket, he can shoot 3’s. He has a strong body where he can post and score inside. He’s a really skilled player who has a mature understanding of the game. He’s got to learn to bring it every single night, which hasn’t always been the case in the past. He’s as good as we have in the metropolitan area.”

Pinkston is very excited to be going James Bell and Markus Kennedy as the newest Wildcats.

“I’m very excited to be committing to Villanova,” Pinkston said. “It’s one of the top programs in the country. I want to play with and against the best players in the country and playing for Villanova will afford me that opportunity. I’m excited and thankful.”

“I just think that there were too many positives that he couldn’t turn down right now,” Kimani Young, Pinkston’s mentor, said. “He got a great place to go to. It’s just as good an opportunity for him as it is for Nova to get him.”

Villanova has one lone remaining target in guard Cory Joseph, who will wait until the spring to decide. Villanova is in Joseph’s final 5, but many believe that UConn currently leads for the standout guard.

…Pinkston will add some nice toughness and bulk to the team when he arrives…hopefully that outside game continues to develop, but he strikes me as exactly the kind of kid who will relish the roughness of the BIG EAST…very excited to have him on board…

This is great except it makes me worry….I (like many) am very excited for the 2011 recruiting class and the talent that Nova has intrested. Ive been dreaming of a Gichrist, Wroten, Christmas, Yacobou class. Do you think this commit of Jay Pinkston will affect the decisions of recruits in 2011?

Well Matt, frankly, it shouldn’t.

-Tony Wroten doesn’t play the same position.
-Yacoubou is more of a 2 whereas Pinkston is more of a 4 in our system.
-Roc Christmas has eliminated us from contention unfortunately.
-Mike Gilchrist is the consensus #1 player regardless of class. He isn’t scared of competition.

Right now I think Wroten and and Gilchrist should be the main wish list for Cats fans for 2011 (in addition t Yacoubou)

such great news…while naturally id prefer to get christmas, this is a more than acceptable consolation…welcome JayVaughn!

and i agree with chris…i dont think this affects 2011 at all. Yacoubo’s already committed, and i dont think anyone’s decision would affect Gilchrist.

as for Wroten, if Cory Joseph comes it might alter his decision…then again, if Cory Joseph comes i don’t think id care all that much either way

Exactly regred. In my eyes anyway, it is either Joseph or Wroten. It would kind of stink to miss on both (although Quinn Cook is a hell of a consolation) but those two are great players who would be incredible in our system.

If Joseph were to commit, that would probably eliminate us with Wroten. But at that point, it doesn’t really matter all that much.

do we have a scholarship for joseph next year or would someone have to leave?

Doug,

We have 11 ’scholarship’ players right now. 13 is the limit.

After losing Redding and Reynolds this year to graduation, we will have 9.

Then you add Bell, Kennedy and Pinkston. That brings us to 12.

So yes, we do have 1 scholly open for Joseph if he wants it.
