Villanova vs. LaSalle Brief Postgame Notes

Game just ended:  5:40 pm eastern time.  Villanova Wildcats defeat LaSalle Explorers 81-63.  Some notes on the game are below.

-LaSalle amassed 10 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game, allowing the Wildcats to lead by a healthy margin throughout.

-Villanova should have been up by about 20 at half, but they could not seem to find the stroke from long range.

-Pretty sure Taylor King got benched in the first half.  He drained a 3 early on, but then didn’t box out on a rebound, which sent King to the bench for the final 17 minutes of the half.

-Halftime score: Villanova 38 LaSalle 30

-Cats upped the lead to 14 early on the second half, but the Explorers did not back down, as they cut the lead down to 6 with about 12 minutes to play.

-Props to Jerrell Williams, who made it to the line 19 times for the Explorers.  Although he missed many of these free throws, his work on the glass was noteworthy.

-Scottie Reynolds and Antonio Pena led the way for the good guys, scoring 14 points each, while Corey Fisher had 13 and Dominic Cheek had 10.

-Rodney Green, a supposed stud for LaSalle, did virtually nothing, scoring 7 points on 2-12 shooting.

-Villanova from 3 point range: 6-23—LaSalle from the 3 point range: 1-10.  Villanova from the stripe: 25-31—LaSalle from the stripe: 20-35.  Villanova rebounds: 28—LaSalle rebounds: 42.

-Maurice Sutton is a decent role player and help defender, but he cannot guard anyone 1 on 1.  Guys go right at him and back him down to where it’s basically a layup.  He needs to get much, much stronger to have any chance of surviving in the Big East.

The only thing that won Villanova the game today was talent and free throw shooting.  Frankly, LaSalle is not very good in terms of skills, but they worked harder than the Cats today, especially on the glass.  Villanova’s superior talent caused all of those turnovers, but against a better team, this would have been a loss.  Lots of work to do for Jay Wright and the coaching staff.

i was very impressed with Dom’s game tonight. He made a few bad decisions, but thats to be expected. He hustles, plays great D, chases rebounds, and he moves well with and without the ball. The more time he gets early on the fewer of those mental errors he’ll make later in the season when we need him most.

Too harsh on Sutton. He is playing INCREDIBLE. He finished with 7 blocks and changed a countless number of shots. He is the biggest surprise of the year thus far and should really be getting the praise of Nova Nation. Dom is going to be one of the best players we’ve witnessed at Villanova. Jay is molding him, can’t wait to see him in two years as a junior. His talen is RAW. But Jay will bring it out. Waiting for Redding and Yarou is KILLIN’ ME! But keep on winning… GO CATS!!!

TK had two very quick fouls during the first half, which led to the benching.

Sutton had 5 blocks and 5 rebounds according to the official boxscore. He has been a consistent 5 rebound guy so far. Murray in the middle was a problem, as he drew enough attention to give Williams room to work. Looks like a committee of Pena, Sutton and Stokes (and Armwood?) switched around on the Williams’ twins, Mekongo and Murray. Those guys collectively, did not have a good day on the boards. Troubling for the team going forward, as Murray looks like the closest center (so far) to those the front court will see in Big East play.
The team was able to control the pace and stay ahead (though not necessarily comfortably ahead) throughout the 2nd half. The ‘Cats did not run them out of the gym; the Explorers will be pretty good this season. I expect Yarou and Murray to have a few good games in 2011 and 2012.

i thought sutton’s and cheek’s play were the only positives for us today. we need to get big and grab some rebounds. yarou will help here if he ever gets healthy. great D. excited to see how suffocating we can be when redding comes back

We better learn to box out and I mean everyone needs to box out we are going to killed on the boards once we start the big east games. Cheek is a great player, watch his pressure and all around defense. He will be an amazing player for us.

I think everyone is beginning to see why we were all so pumped when Cheek committed last year!

Cheek definitely has a lot of upside and the potential to be a stud. Like I said, Sutton is a decent role player, but 1 on 1, he gets backed down and cannot hold his ground. Most, if not all of his blocks, occurred when he came over to double up on a guy. There is nothing wrong with this, as he made some solid help plays on the defensive end. I just don’t see him being a star in the Big East, since his strength and offensive game are lacking. Without Yarou, though, he can contribute.
