Reynolds Shouldering the Load

Whenever a team loses upperclassmen to graduation, someone else has to step up.  For Villanova, that someone is Scottie Reynolds.  This may seem obvious, but with the suspension of Reggie Redding, Reynolds has everyone looking up to him for guidance, which Terry Toohey of the Delco Times points out.

Jay Wright on Scottie’s leadership thus far:

He’s a tremendous leader.  He’s like an NBA veteran.  That’s how much respect he has.  Everyone on the team looks up to him and Scottie takes that responsibility serious.  I was away one day in September and I called him up to see what was going on.  He was in the video room with our freshmen going over our defensive concepts.

Reynolds, discussing that specific day:

That was just something I felt I had to do.  We were doing all these things on the court that they had never seen before so I decided to take them up and show they what we were trying to do.  I showed them the Duke game (from the NCAA Tournament).  We weren’t perfect in that game.  We made mistakes, but we worked hard and we did it together.  That’s what made that group so special.  We knew we were going to work hard and work together.

Reynolds will certainly be a focal point for both teams tomorrow night, as the young Wildcats will be looking to feed off Scottie’s experience, while the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights will definitely try to prevent a big scoring outburst from the senior guard.  Scottie will be a key in just about every game this season, and ESPN’s Andy Katz can’t wait to see Reynolds against Maryland, as this is one of his “25 games you’ll want to see” this year.  Katz also looks forward to the big showdown with the Mountaineers in early March at the Wachovia Center

Dec. 6: Villanova vs. Maryland, BB&T Classic (FSN): Villanova is probably overrated, while Maryland isn’t getting enough publicity.  This game in Washington D.C., matches Scottie Reynolds against Greivis Vasquez in one of the better playmaker games.

March 6: West Virginia at Villanova (CBS): The top two teams meet for, perhaps, the Big East title in the last game of the season.  The Big East schedule makers got this one right, just like Pitt and Connecticut last season.

Overrated according to Katz?  To each their own.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

yeah, on the Villanova site on ESPN they have a video with Katz predicting a regular season championship for WVU by 2 games.

As far as I can tell, dude saw a close horse race and decided to go all in, because he’s been pumping WVU hard for a while now.

Most of the consensus is that it’ll be relatively close, but Katz’ lather smacks of reactionary commentary.

Katz is a putz. He is so against the top 5 ranking and I don’t understand why. No team in the top 5 has proven anything and besides Kansas (as much as I hate to say it) there is no consensus top 2 – 10.

- North Carolina may be awesome (unbelievable front court…exponentially better than WVU).
- Kentucky could be great (its all on freshman).
- MSU lost a ton with their departures but have a system similar to Jay Bones that makes them a scary team because anyone can fill in.
- Texas is very young and very talented.
- Purdue is a Big Ten team which as everyone knows has been very weak in post season play for about ten years on both the basketball and football side considering the hype.
- Duke has been slaughtered in the post season for 5 years now (including Nova).
- Tennessee…I have nothing to say about them…are they supposed to be good?
- Butler?…really? They are a poor man’s Duke team. Ridiculous to have them top 10, absolutely ridiculous (I could totally end up eating those words but I doubt it). Not to say they are not good but they are not a national title contender.

Point being I don’t see how you can say Villanova is way overrated. They may not be the best or 5th best but if they are not in the top 10 it would/should be a very big surprise to most.

Andy Katz hates Villanova. It is plain for the eye to see. He kept saying all year how Nova was not that good and wouldn’t do anything in the tournament.

Still not sure if he ever admitted he was wrong. Same story this year.

We’ll see ya in March Andy.

i read the katz article earlier and was going to mention it on here…katz is ridiculous.

im fine with anyone’s opinion, and if he feels WVU will win the big east, thats fine…he just doesnt have to mention it seemingly any time someone brings up the big east. pump up WVU all you want, but dont take shots at Villanova any time you get a chance. am i skeptical of Villanova’s lofty pre-season ranking, sure. but do we deserve it? hell yea, we do.

most importantly, though…katz can shut up because the season is now upon us. lets see our boys go out there and do what we expect them to do – kick ass and prove him wrong.
