Now, let me preface this by saying who knows what this really means. As you’ll see when you click through to the article, Gilchrist says that he wants to be recruited heavily. So he may just be playing Villanova and soaking in all the love they are showing him. But, for now, let’s just be happy.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has an update on super-recruit Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick’s in New Jersey where they talk with him about recruiting, amongst other things. This sequence of quotes from the article are sure to make any Villanova fan give the old silent fist pump.

“It’s wide open,” the 6-foot-7 swingman said. “I want to be recruited heavily.”

The 15-year-old even elevated his arms, motioning that Kentucky and Villanova are neck and neck.

“Michael loves Villanova,” said Cindy Richardson, Gilchrist’s mother. “It’s Kentucky, Villanova. Villanova, Kentucky.”

Seriously?

“Yes,” she said.

I take the ‘elevating of the arms to mean that Gilchrist threw up a big V, but I could be misinterpreting that. Anyways, we’ve all heard for the better part of a year now that Gilchrist is a lock to John Calipari (first at Memphis, now at Kentucky) and that still may be true, but it’s always good to keep hearing your name mentioned. Kudos to Jay Wright and the rest of the staff.

Keep in mind that Gilchrist is a 2011 recruit, so he won’t be signing anywhere for a while.

This kid can play. I can’t believe he is not 16 years old yet. He would be a great fit for Villanova. Maybe if his family figures into the decision that will help us. They will be much closer and have an easier chance of seeing him play in college. I am sure Jay will figure a way to get this done.

login I hate to say it but I think distance is really going to have no factor at all in this recruitment. Just look to the Tyreke Evans situation and the rumors about Calipari flying his whole family and entourage to all the games.

On the other hand, you may be right, but with Calipari at the helm, anything is possible. And now that he is at Kentucky, his resources have only increased.

Chris you could be right. Let’s hope he picks Nova. Your right about his resources. Look at the schools in the final four this past year. Nova was by far the smallest school in the group.

The last thing the Nova program needs is a one-and-done player. Glad Tyreke Evans picked Memphis. I’ll take a Foye, Sumptner or Reynolds type anyday.

BTW – That pic is of a 15 yr old … looks like he wouldn’t have a problem buying beer.

Absolutely true about the picture. Looks like a full grown man.

And I agree about the one and done types but those are the types of players that win you championships. I would take Gilchrist in a heart beat.

I’d take him in half a heartbeat–every word on this kid is that he’s the prototypical hustle/defense/glue guy, the exact type of player Wright has coveted at Nova–but apparently he’s closer to World Wide Wes than Tyreke Evans was, and WWW gift-wrapped Evans for Calipari. In caps this time: GIFT-WRAPPED.

I don’t want to get all sour-grapey, because I’d love to have gotten Evans, and I’ve already expressed my basketball mancrush on Gilchrist, but the greater distance our program can keep from WWW, the happier my soul will be.
